OXFORD – An Abbeville woman has been charged in the death of her newborn son, who died Nov. 28 after being left for a day in the backseat of a car when overnight temperatures were near freezing.

Jilisa Jeffries, 20, was charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence.

Bond was set at $40,000. Law enforcement officials will present the case to the Lafayette County grand jury to determine if the case merits a trial.

I'm guess I'm just a callous individual, because I can't for the life of me see how anyone could forget their own child for any period of time in a car. Doesn't matter whether the weather's hot or cold, I can't help but think this is a way to murder the kid without having to take the rap for murder. I had kids of my own and I've been just as busy as anyone and NEVER forgot a baby in the car. Even if you do "forget" them for a minute or two, if you're any account as a parent at all, you realize they aren't around within 10 minutes tops. I get sick of hearing this "accidentally" left in a car to die crap and I don't buy it for a minute. If you're that airheaded, perhaps you should have rethought children in the first place. I say they lock her in a freezing car overnight, just to give her a taste of it, then toss her in jail for as long as possible. This is a clear case of another woman with substandard to non-existent maternal instincts.

Er...we have to choose one or the other, T?

I just can't get right with infanticide, whether pre- or post-natal.

Is this supposed to be preferable to having a abortion?
