Tupelo's new police chief will be nominated Tuesday, and according to the City Council agenda, it's Lee County Jail Administrator Capt. Tony Carleton.

Mayor Jack Reed Jr. will nominate, Carleton, 40, at Tuesday's council meeting, and the council must vote to confirm the nomination.

If approved, Carleton will replace outgoing Chief Harold Chaffin when he retires Dec. 31.

Mayor Reed and Captain Tony Carleton released these comments regarding the Tupelo police chief nomination to come this Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at the Tupelo City Council Meeting:

Mayor Reed:

“I’m excited to be nominating Captain Carleton. We had several excellent candidates, and I’m sure the citizens will be impressed with the qualifications he brings to the job, just as I am.”

Captain Carleton:

“I am deeply honored to be nominated by Mayor Reed, and I look forward to having the opportunity to work with the citizens of Tupelo, Tupelo Police Team, Mayor, and elected officials.”

Mr. Carlton obviously wasn't everyone's first choice. But, everyone never agrees anyway. I am satisfied with most decisions that the current Mayor and Council have made thus far. Until proven otherwise, I trust in thier judgement on this decision. Keep your eyes open and you will see. Keep them closed and blind you will be.

I believe with all the crap with the ethics committee etc that has been going on, that someone should have been brought in from outside so there would be no preconceived notions. Maybe this was to keep the salary down--a great comfort during perilous times...you know, sometimes there are just more important things than just trying to get along...

You have got to be kidding me!!Tony Carleton is a jailer and a instructor. When times got tough at TPD he quit and went south. He has never worked narcotics or in investigations. He may be a good person but he is not a Chief. There were more candidates that were a lot more qualified and suited for the job.Watch and see,TPD will be no better off.Bad choice Mayor!!!

I have known Tony Carleton since childhood, and know he is a good man. I don't know enough about police work, etc. to tell you if he or any other candidate is qualified, but I feel confortable with this choice because of the person he is. I would actually be worried if all of the police department were on board with this. Having to prove yourself and be accountable is not such a bad thing.

I feel Mr. Carleton is not a good choice. I agree with others here he has not had the experience of working with the police dept. He had worked there in the beginning of his career and now is at TSD. I would have thought someone inside the police department would fill this job. I would have liked to have seen Capt Jackie Clayton promoted. He has been with the force for over 30 years. Jackie is still a young man. I think he would be a good fit. I know he is a Christian family man. Whoever gets this job and it does seem as if Mr. Carleton will, I hope he is more visible than Chief Chaffin. You never seem to see him even on the news much less out in public.

what ARE you talking about Kennedy...I don't know the man and know nothing of his qualifications...I just think we need to have people in charge who are nice..real nice...everyone knows when you're nice, everything takes care of itself...If Mr Carleton is nice, I'm all for him...now be nice...

well...as long as the new guy is nice...he must be nice and desire to avoid confrontation...If Mr Carleton meets these qualifications, he is the perfect fit for Mayor Reed...afterall, life's a party!!!

What a joke. This is the best that Reed can come up with, someone across the street at the sheriff's department. Tony has no experience being a poice officer. He's already worked at TPD years ago and has very limited experience. The jail staff hate him because he is a supreme micro manager. Just was Tupelo needs someone who has no supervisor experience running the police department. Looks like Robert Hall told Reed exactly who he wanted to be chief since he can't be a cop anymore. Keep in mind Reed is friends with Hall, Hall is friends with Tony. Once again what a joke. I feel for all the guys and gals at TPD!!!!!!!!
