JACKSON — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is set to announce a second round of state budget cuts, only five months into the fiscal year.

Barbour will announce the reductions during a news conference Thursday afternoon in Jackson.

Figures released this week showed that in November, Mississippi's tax collections fell short of expectations for the 15th month in a row.

In September, the Republican governor cut about $172 million out of the nearly $6 billion budget. He has said since then that more cuts would be needed — and this round of reductions might be as big as the first one.

Education advocates worry that schools, community colleges and universities could suffer if they lose more money.

What would be helpful is if the state were to join one of the multi-state lotteries. They could use the revenue from that towards education as most other states do, and lessen the impact on the schools when we have these tax shortfalls.

why not add heroin and crack? How about meth? Why dont we just legalize prostitution and human trafficking? How about we just legalize child pornography and put a heavy tax on it? Anything in the name of increasing revenue...

Since Mississippi is having trouble with taxes and such, why don't they discuss and suggest a medical marijuana or marijuana legalization bill?

There are 13 states that have already approved medical marijuana and I know that 2-3 other states are currently looking into it. They need to join with the other states.

Why were our legislative leaders (Nunnellee and McCoy) allowed to push through a budget when both knew that it was bogus and would require the governor to make cuts? Nunnellee, McCoy and the rest of that bunch should be held accountable for their negligence.
