Mississippi State’s senior center has 409 career blocks, just three shy of the SEC career mark held by LSU’s Shaquille O’Neal, who’s currently with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
There’s a high probability Varnado will get the mark tonight when Bethune-Cookman visits Humphrey Coliseum for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
“It’s going to be a good honor just being in the rankings with Shaq,” Varnado said after his 20-point, eight-block effort against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday. “But you know, I'm not worried about that, I'm just worried about getting the win on Saturday.”
Varnado, who has 15 blocks in two games this season, is 126 away from the NCAA career mark of 538, held by Wojciech Mydra of Louisiana-Monroe. Varnado has led the nation in blocks for the past two seasons.
MSU is coming off an 82-67 win over SLU and is 1-1. Bethune-Cookman (1-2) is located in Daytona Beach, Fla.
