OXFORD – Continued chants "The South Shall Rise Again" today cost Ole Miss fans a favorite game tune, "From Dixie With Love."

Chancellor Dan Jones banned the playing of the pep song medley because fans refused to stop the chant.

Campus sources said Jones sent a letter announcing his decision, threatened for more than a week, to the Daily Mississippian, the independent, student-led campus newspaper.

The song is a blend of "Dixie," "All My Trials" and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" written by an assistant band director in the mid-1970s apparently as a way to get away from just "Dixie," which had become offensive to many peoploe in the post Civil Rights era.

Mr. Jones, I would like very much for you to understand what your new position here really is. Your are the new supreme commander at the University of Mississippi but ……”WE ARE OLE MISS”…. New employees come and go but we never go away....

IS IT EVER GOING TO STOP? THIS IS STILL THE

SOUTH. YOU CANNOT CHANGE THAT. I THINK THAT

WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH TAKEN FROM US. WHEN DID

WE LOSE ALL OUR RIGHTS? WHAT EVER HAPPENED

TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO

A FREE COUNTRY OUR MEN FOUGHT AND DIED FOR?

I THINK WE HAVE AN IDIOT AT OLE MISS FOR

CHANCELLOR. MAYBE HE NEEDS TO BE BANNED!

YOU CAN TAKE ANYTHING YOU WANT BUT YOU STILL

CANNOT TAKE THE SOUTH OUT OF US.

REBEL AND PROUD OF IT!!!!

These guys are in College rasing hell on a Saturday afternoon.. . they could care less about "From Dixie with Love" all the want is a small flag pole to stir their drink and a football team to "Win" games. And F.Y.I.; the colors of Red & Blue were chosen for Mississippi's School colors, to mimic the Red of Yale and the Blue of Harvard.. . not the confederate battle flag! Just take it on back to Moo U.(Feed, Seed, and Fertilizer)

Well - I'm black and an Auburn fan so I really don't care. But - is it really that serious to make fans stop going? Sure, he shouldn't have banned the song or told students what they can or cannot say; but, students are creative and I'm sure someone will come up with a new one.

I hope for many empty seats Saturday (mine will be)as Tennessee comes in for the slaughter. The Ole Miss I grew up with is DEAD! Tough for me to accept, but I must. Stupidity is bad. Stupidity coupled with Stubborness is a leadership nightmare. I think the toilet just flushed.

does anybody really believe that the south intends to rise again and fight a war to enslave other human beings? Evidently the chancellor thinks it may be a threat...sheesh...

i'm not a fan of ole miss, but i just became a fan of anyone who chants the phrase after every song played, every first down, hell after every comercial break. politicians and people who play politics are dog spit to me. the fans who want the chant are in the majority and should chant until they turn blue in the face. show this chancellor that he can't silence a proud people in order to butt lick PC zealots.

I'm a State fan and honestly, and think this is ridiculous. I agree that Ole Miss fans should start chanting this after the National Anthem to see what happens.

Next up, no more Ole Miss, it will strictly be Mississippi, no more "Rebels", no more red and blue (based off Confederate flag)......seriously....this is all stupid on the Chancelor's part.

this is absolutely ridiculous. The school changes the song to be politically correct and not offend and the minority wants more. this is a case of the minority trying to control the majority. As a student planning to go to Ole Miss, this makes me reconsider that decision.

Every time OleMiss gets a new chancellor, he takes something away. First, colonel reb came off the helmets, then no more "Dixie", next the confederate flags disappeared, then they tried to get rid of our mascot all together, and now this. I don't now which will be next either "Ole Miss" or Hotty Toddy.

I got a chant for you, "Go TO HELL Dan Jones!"
