TUPELO - Amy Nash has been elected president of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association, a nonprofit economic development organization for downtown Tupelo.

Nash starts her term in January, taking over from Camille Sloan, who has been been the board's president for two years. Sloan is executive vice president of Reed's.

Nash is a public relations specialist for Cellular South and has been actively involved in DMTSA, including serving as the current vice president of the board and the 2008 chairman of the Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival.

At the same board meeting earlier this month, John and Sherry Avila were elected co-chairs of the organization's Elvis Presley Festival committee. The Avilas co-chaired the festival this year with Keith Henley.

Along with the Elvis Festival, DTMSA also is responsible for the Downtown Tupelo Farmer's Market, Cellular South Networking@Noon, the annual Chili Festival, the Reed's Tupelo Christmas Parade and many retail promotions, such as trick-or-treating events at the shops downtown.

This year DMTSA also sponsored the Down on Main outdoor concert series.

DTMSA also has hired a traffic consultant to look at ways to turn downtown's Main Street into a destination. The consultants earlier this month recommended reducing the street from Green to Front streets to two lanes with the options of bike lanes, turning lanes and on-street parking.
