SHANNON - Legilbert Bogan picked a fine time to make his best throw of the season.

With a 1-point lead hanging in the balance and his Shannon team facing a critical 4th-and-5 late in Friday night's Class 4A playoff opener against Kosciusko, Bogan threw a perfect strike to wideout Jake Scott, who rumbled down to the Kosciusko 11-yard line.

One play later, senior Keon McGaughy raced in from 11 yards out to put the icing on a physically-draining 27-20 first-round victory for the Red Raiders.

"We just had to make a play down there," Bogan said. "Their defense was tough all night on the short passes, but Jake made a great catch and we came away with a touchdown. That's what we're supposed to do in situations like that."

The late touchdown run capped another sterling performance for McGaughy, who rushed for 184 yards and scored all four Shannon touchdowns.

"That's just what he does," said Shannon head coach Chad Cook, who watched his team improve to 10-1 and bounce back from its lone loss of the season at Itawamba. "He really ran hard there in the second half. He started breaking through arm tackles and he put us on his back, like he always does."

Just six days after the loss in Fulton, Shannon found itself in another dogfight Friday night, as Koscisuko, the No. 3 seed out of Division 4-4A, stood toe-to-toe with the Red Raiders for three quarters.

Shannon never led by more than seven at any point, and the teams were tied on three separate occasions.

"We fought and fought, I can't say enough about the effort of my guys," said first-year Kosciusko head coach Stan McCain. "We were right there with them all night, but Shannon just keeps coming at you and coming at you. They are a tremendous football team."

McGaughy wasted little time in putting his stamp on the festivities, breaking off a 64-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the night. After Scott's extra point, Shannon led 7-0 just 26 seconds into the game.

Kosciusko answered right back, as Jeremy Williams darted in from 39 yards out less than two minutes later. Eddie Duncan added the PAT.

After a 6-yard TD run by Earl Winters gave Kosciusko a 14-7 lead, McGaughy scored on a 9-yard run midway through the second quarter. Scott's PAT knotted the score at 14.

"We were a little flat for whatever reason there in the first half," Cook said. "A lot of that had to do with the fact that Kosciusko is a very good football team, but we were able to pick it up when we had to."

After allowing 164 yards on the ground in the first half, Shannon's defensive front stiffened after the break, allowing just 46 total yards in the second half.

"I told my defensive line earlier in the week that it all starts up front," Cook said, "and they certainly lived up to that tonight. We can go as far as the defensive line takes us."

Mcgaughy's third touchdown, a 3-yard run, gave the Red Raiders a 21-14 lead three minutes into the third quarter.

Kosciusko's lone score of the second half came courtesy of its defense, as defensive back Tre Boyd picked up a Shannon fumble and raced 68 yards for a touchdown. Kociusko's 2-point attempt failed, leaving the score at 21-20 and setting the stage for McGaughy's final dagger.

Shannon finished the night with 381 total yards offensively, as Bogan completed 11 passes for 183 yards to go along with McGaughy's big night.

With the win, Shannon advances to host Cleveland Friday night in the second round. Shannon and Cleveland met in week five of the regular season, with the Red Raiders claiming a 27-0 win at home.
