DeLaughter pleaded guilty July 30 to one count of lying to FBI investigators. They were seeking information about whether former Oxford attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs and others bribed DeLaughter for help on a legal fees lawsuit against Scruggs.
In his plea agreement, DeLaughter agreed to serve 18 months in prison in exchange for the other charges being dropped or no new charges against him.
Once heralded for the successful prosecution of Byron de la Beckwith in the shooting death of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, DeLaughter will be sentenced by Senior Judge Glen H. Davidson in Aberdeen.
The letters, which usually ask for leniency, will be examined by the Daily Journal and Clarion-Ledger reporter Paul Quinn during specified times Nov. 12 and 13.
DeLaughter maintains he was not bribed.
