Union County Sheriff Tommy Wilhite said a family was babysitting the child and left the child unattended in a room and that’s when the dog attacked the child.
The incident happened on County Road 87 about 5:30 p.m., according to Wilhite. A 19-year-old who was at the home at the time hit the dog and stabbed it several times trying to get it off the child.
Wilhite said he is confident the case will have to go to a grand jury for a decision on whether or not to file charges on the babysitters. No one has been arrested at this time.

"If an ox gore a man or a woman that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox [shall be] quit. (off the hook, in other words) But if the ox were wont (known) to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death." - Exodus 21:28-29
Not saying the owners know they have vicious dogs, but the FACTS are THIS BREED has more of a tendency than all others to kill or maim. Not saying it's the only one, but it is the 'top dog.' Who knows when his 'dear, sweet family pet' will snap & become a killer? Not one of these bull dog owners would own up to knowing his might would snap, just probably glad it wasn't THEIR kin, so thus they remain blind to the fact these dogs are known more than any other breed, to be vicious, unpredictable killers. I suppose that is why the Exodus verse says the owners should be put to death as well because they would NEVER face the fact they were endangering the rest of their community with owning a known vicious animal, such as some of the commenters who take up for this breed will do in these comment sections.
The facts are in it was a pit bull that killed this child, yet these commenters wanted to deny the fact it was the *beloved* pit bull that actually did this killing, so typical of pit bull enthusiasts owners. "Poor pit bulls, they ALWAYS get such a bad rap, for no good reason! (sniff sniff) It has to REALLY, TRUTHFULLY be another dog."
BUT.....
"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through 1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996....[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities." (Sacks JJ, Sinclair L, Gilchrist J, Golab GC, Lockwood R. Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998. JAVMA 2000;217:836-840.)
That is from the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, not some animal control, pit bull hate group.
The statistics show that the "pit bull-types" and Rottweilers have a tendency to kill rather than wound.
