The letters usually are written by friends or family members to ask the court's leniency for a defendant, although, in some cases, they are written by people who oppose leniency.
Once heralded as the successful prosecutor of Byron de la Beckwith in the murder of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, DeLaughter pleaded guilty to one count of lying to FBI investigators.
He was indicted in early 2009 with former Oxford attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs as part of a scheme to be bribed to help Scruggs with a lawsuit before him, Wilson v. Scruggs.
DeLaughter maintains he was never bribed.
