JACKSON — Gov. Haley Barbour has appointed a black lawyer to a judgeship — the same one who earlier criticized the governor for his lack of diversity when it comes to judicial appointments.

Barbour has chosen Malcolm O. Harrison of Jackson to serve the unexpired term of former Hinds County Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter, who resigned following his conviction in a judicial bribery scheme.

Harrison is a past president of the Magnolia Bar Association. The group had urged Barbour to appoint a black attorney to succeed DeLaughter. The association said Barbour had not picked a black to serve on the bench in any of his 20 appointments since he's been in office.

And now other blacks who considered themselves qualified for a judgeship will complain that THEY were overlooked simply because Mr Harrison was picked based on him being the squeaky wheel...I say if a black judge is the most qualified, appoint him or her by all means...but I dont think ANYONE should be chosen on basis of their skin color while trying to fill some quota or satisfy some cry-baby advocacy group. Was Mr. Harrison the absolute best person to fill the position? I have no idea...the question is does Mr Harrison want the absolute best person appointed to the position...or just the best black person...
