So that, factored in with playing a good Pontotoc team, likely resulted in the Indians’ struggles – turnovers, passing game, run defense, ect. – during a 16-13 victory on Friday night.
Nonetheless, that game served as a perfect tuneup for the Daily Journal’s third-ranked large school. The Indians (9-0, 4-0 Division 1-4A) will close out the regular season at home this Friday against top-ranked Shannon (9-0, 4-0 Division 1-4A). The winner of that game wins the Division 1-4A title.
“We are going to be focused more than ever,” Miller said. “We haven’t been focused in all of these other games because we (the starters) have been out after the first half, but Shannon’s going to be big.”
The Red Raiders, who beat then-undefeated Pontotoc 25-13 over a week ago, helped set up this week’s big game by winning 30-7 at New Albany on Friday night.
“I think everybody around here has been looking forward to that one,” IAHS head coach Jamie Mitchell said after Friday’s game, just 10 hours or so before his team began preparations for the Shannon game. “I know they have a great football team. It will be a great environment for high school football.”
Meanwhile, Booneville (9-0, 4-0) wrapped up its first Division 1-3A title with Saturday’s 44-37 win over Corinth. The Blue Devils have one more regular-season game left, at Belmont, and will treat it like a playoff game, their coach said.
“It’s a big game for us,” Jim Drewry said. “We can’t have a letdown next week against Belmont heading into the playoffs.”
Corinth (5-4, 3-1), which won the division title last year, finishes the regular season at Kossuth.
“I like where we are,” Warriors coach Jimmy Mitchell said about his team’s performance of late. “Now, if we just make plays when the opportunity comes.
“You can’t drop interceptions and miss assignments and expect to win.”
