TUPELO – The City Council tonight voted 4-2 to make the Spain House a historic landmark, thus saving it from potential demolition.

The house, at 553 West Main St., dates back to 1910. It is owned by Calvary Baptist Church, which had wanted it removed so it could develop the property for other uses.

The church had offered to give the house away but could not find any takers.

Despite the vote, a church spokesman said efforts would continue to have the house removed.

For more on the story, see Wednesday's Daily Journal.

Great news!

What a brilliant idea.

I guess at least 4 members of the city council do not attend Calvary.
