OPINION: Southern dislike of Obama an obstacle for state Dems

JACKSON - Many Mississippi Democrats saw the election of Barack Obama and the success of their party during the 2008 national elections as a signal that momentum in the state was on their side.

An Obama victory gave new hope for Democrats in the 2011 statewide elections.

Some recent nationwide polling might throw a bucketful of political icewater on their optimism.

One recent nationwide poll gave the Democratic president a favorability rating of 53-39. This was consistent with most other national polls. But in the South, Obama was viewed as favorable by 25 percent of those polls and unfavorable by 75 percent. The same poll asked respondents if they would rather see more Democrats or Republicans elected to Congress. Democrats won handily in every area of the country with the exception of the South, where Republicans won by 26 percent.

An earlier poll indicated that a majority of Southerners either did not think Obama was born in the United States or were not sure. In the rest of the nation, the percentage who believed Obama was born in the U.S. and thus eligible to be president was well above 70 percent.

When it is factored in that African-Americans in the South generally have a favorable opinion of Obama and of the Democratic Party, it is evident that white Southerners as a whole are not crazy about the president or about the national Democratic Party.

Is the South out of touch - out of the often-talked about, but difficult to find political mainstream? Or is the South just more pragmatic and clearer-thinking than the rest of the country? Your humble scribe for one agrees that in this country the majority rules, but that doesn't always mean the majority is right.

But like so many things in politics - and in life - there is no easy, clear-cut answer to who is wrong or right - the South or the rest of the country.

That is just a snapshot of the lay of the land.

To quote someone else who quoted someone else who quotes someone else - "it is what it is."

But the question is, should the Obama victory and the current success of the Democrats in electing officeholders on the national level give Mississippi Democrats reason for optimism?

Back in 2008 when Obama was elected, it did. But since then, the anger against Obama in particular and Democrats in general has greatly intensified - especially in the South.

How will that anger play out in 2011 when Mississippians go to the polls to elect everything from governor to coroner?

Currently, Mississippi has only one statewide elected Democrat. Will the state Republican Party try to connect the Democratic Party's nominee for governor, for secretary of state, for a Mississippi U.S. House seat to a president who is unpopular with a vast majority of white Mississippians?

How will it play out next November when the national Republican Party goes all out to try to defeat first-term Democratic U.S. House member Travis Childers of Booneville?

In 2008, the Republican Party went all-out to try to connect Childers with Obama. It didn't work.

But has the anger been ratcheted up enough to make a difference this time - in 2010 with Childers and 2011 with all statewide races?

While Mississippi Republicans are dominant in statewide races, they often have expressed frustration that Democrats do as well as they do in legislative races. Democrats control the state House and have a numerical, though ineffective, majority in the Senate.

In upcoming elections, state Democrats will be campaigning against what seems to be a rising tide of anger against their national party brethren. Perhaps they can overcome that anger. History indicates that many will.

But that earlier optimism might have been misplaced or at least short-lived.

Vietnamvet, how is Creep using the race card? I didn't really see it. All he said was that Christians in Mississippi are racists. What's so bad about that? All the people I know who warm a pew on Sundays are racists. So what? That's just how it is, but whatever. Jobs are what everybody wants, not just old republicans who have convinced themselves that the Republicans have their bast interest at heart.

Ultracreep, ya wanna grab a beer next Sunday? I'm the designated drinker this time...

You democrats have use the race card too many times, it no longer has any meaning except that someone dares to disagree with the "Dear Leader".

That's the spirit, Bichon, you concern yourself with salvation and leave others to their own devices. Great thing about America...I can believe whatever I want, you can believe whatever you want. Let's keep it that way. People who have differing beliefs and viewpoints shouldn't be forced to subscribe to Judeo-Christian ones. That is not freedom.

Mr. T I am so very happy Mrs. T has found a job. Good news alkways gives my spirits a lift.

Just wanted to say the next seven years will be the same for me as you.

I am also sad to find out that I am such a sinner and believe abortion and homosexuality is a sin according to Christ.

When Christ was on earth his purpose was to teach how to obtain salvation.

I pray that Lady and Ultracreep will invite me to go to churh with them for bible study so I might have eternal salvation. I am more concerned about being in heaven than this earthly tabernacle.

Mississippi, please pull your heads out of the sand. If you took away all the governmental help the impoverished citizens of this state receive they'd be out starving and homeless in the streets. All these supposed conservative "Christians" kind of forget about Christ when it comes to taking care of the poor and unfortunate, don't they? Also there's this entrenched racism that we still have in a lot of quarters, though people will use any other excuse to refute it. They fear change, and they fear having to share the large piece of pie that's been guaranteed to them by the good ol' boy network that is very much alive today. They'll use the veneer of religion and morals to be stingy, sexist, and racist, and they have the right to think like this, but they are slowly losing the ability to force people to believe what they believe or behave in the way they want them to. Hence the big right wing backlash...hate to tell you this, but progress will prevail. The landscape is changing whether you like it or not. Minorities, women, people of different religions, and gays deserve the same rights you have, and they'll get them in time. So you can stay behind and be bitter or you can decide to live your life the way you want to and leave others to do the same.

Barak hussien Obama, Muammar Gaddafi and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are the axis of evil! ( the three muslimigos) It is impossible to say which would do the most harm to America.

Obama states that America is no longer a Christian nation!

In his speech in Egypt he stated we were mostly a muslin nation.

Obama sponsored a nationl muslim day of prayer in Washington.

I know Childers stated over and over in his campaign "Obama has not endorsed my cmpaign"

Now Childers cannot distance himself from Obama.

My questions to Chliders.

(1) Did you vote for Hussien Obama?

(2) Did you vote for Nancy Pelosi for speaker of

the house?

(3) Did you vote for the massave Mississippi

job killing spending (so called stimilus)

bill?

I wonder how many people outside of Prentiss county saw the cozy tete-e-tete photo of Tammi Childers and Michelle Obama that ran in the Booneville Independent flaunting Tammi's social climbing status.

Childers will not be able to separate himself from Obama, Pelosi and Franks in the 2010 election.

I am amazed at the former hard core Childer's supporters that are shaking their heads in shame and disbelief.

Childers spoke at the Jacinto 4th of July festival and did not mention what he was doing for Mississippi. Instead he raged on and on about how the republicans were holding up passing a budget. I belive, Mr. Harrison, you stated the dems has a majority in the Mississippi house and senate? Yet they blame the republicans for holding up the process.

I was once an avid supporter of former Senator John White, however during his next to last campaign we were talking and I stated that Democrats in Mississippi were different from the National democrats. John White said "nop, they are the same"

Mississippi democrats are successful because most Mississippians still separate local candidates from the national party in their minds.

Folks, Uncle Sam is not the daddy of your children.
