In the first quarter alone, he saw a couple of touchdowns negated due to penalties, while two dropped passes prevented other scores.
In the end, though, the Shannon coach got what he wanted. A victory.
Friday night, the Red Raiders overcame a sluggish start just in time to post a 26-0 win against Tishomingo County to keep their perfect record intact at 6-0 overall and 1-0 in Division 1-4A play.
Shannon, which hosts North Pontotoc this Friday, manufactured 319 yards of total offense and limited the Braves (2-4, 0-1) to just 90 yards.
But where the Red Raiders did their damage was on the ground. They pounded out 319 rushing yards, led by Keon McGuaghy's 210.
In fact, it was McGuaghy who jumpstarted the offense when he scored on a 62-yard scamper in the second quarter before finding the end zone late in the half on an 11-yard run for a 14-0 advantage.
"We didn't exactly start off fast," Cook said. "As a coach, you always want perfection. We obviously didn't have that. But we recovered and started making plays. I told our guys to not worry what happened in the past and to just focus on each play coming up. When we did that, we starting making plays here and there."
In the second half, Shannon cranked up its passing game.
After Legilbert Bogan extended the lead to 20-0 on 11-yard scoring toss to Darious Brown, he then connected with Jarrius Hampton for a 14-yard scoring strike for the game's final points.
Bogan finished the night with 74 passing yards.
"Tish County played hard, and it was a very physical game," Cook said. "Penalties just killed us. Early on, the effort was there. We just didn't make plays."
The Braves look to rebound next week at Pontotoc.
"We're struggling, but we're a young football team that's competing hard," Braves coach Steve Carter said. "I was really proud of how we played against the No. 1 4A team in the state. We just didn't have enough speed and size to do anything we with them. We're getting better every week, but the schedule is getting tougher."
