PONTOTOC – Pontotoc coach Mike Bain thought he was driving the lead four-wheeler fast enough during Saturday’s Pontotoc Cross Country Invitational.

Mooreville runner Jesus Solis didn’t think so.

When Bain slowed, an anxious Solis motored past him on his way to a winning 5K time of 18 minutes, 40 seconds in the Class 1A, 2A, 3A boys race at Longbow Trails.

“I had to keep it up,” Solis said of his brisk pace. “When the four-wheeler slowed down, I had to pass him.”

Bain admitted that he wasn’t paying attention, which allowed the race’s lead runner to catch him. “He woke me up,” Bain said, then smiled.

Solis said he was pleased with his time and credited his conditioning work.

“I’ve been practicing a lot,” he said. “I’m in shape. I feel good right now. I feel like I could win state.”

Myrtle’s Bryan Cook (19:24) was second and Mooreville’s Eric Dilworth (19:56) third.

West Union won the 1A-2A-3A boys team title with 80 points to 81 for runner-up East Union.

Ripley’s girls got top-three finishes from Paige Rowland (18:38), Loresha Cox (18:52) and Madison Moore (19:42) to capture the team title with 25 points.

Holman cruises

Tupelo’s Max Holman had no challengers in the 4A-5A-6A competition, blistering the course in 16:38 to prepare for next week’s race in Louisville, Ky.

His Golden Wave teammates – Harrison Campeau (18:00) and Stephen Dudas (18:17) – finished second and third.

Tupelo won the boys team crown with 17 points. Saltillo was second with 71 while host Pontotoc was third with 74.

In the girls’ 4A-5A-6A race, Tupelo edged Pontotoc 35-39 in the points standings. Saltillo was third with 57.

Tupelo’s Katherine Steinman (17:01)came on strong to pass Pontotoc’s Whitney Ray (17:25)to win. Saltillo’s Leland Flanagan (17:45) was third.

“I thought (Ray) ran well; we worked together,” Steinman said. “I don’t remember when I passed her. I wasn’t paying attention. She ran awesome.”

In the junior high race, Tupelo’s Melia Milne and Michael Robinson were the winners.
