JACKSON — A state business organization has endorsed Mississippi University for Women changing its name to Reneau University.

Blake Wilson, president of the Mississippi Economic Council, says MUW must move forward to attract students and research shows there is a need for a new name.

Last month, MUW President Claudia Limbert announced Reneau University as her pick for the new name after a months-long, committee-based name search.

Limbert says research shows low recognition of MUW outside Mississippi's borders and perceptions that it is still a school for women. She has projected a loss of students and funding if a change isn't made.

The state College Board and the Legislature must approve the change.

Why doesn't that big, fat Blake Wilson go back to Deleware? If he had his way all the place names of Mississippi, including the name "Mississippi" would be renamed so we could sell more crap. He is a picture of obsession with consumption himself. Even if his "business argument" had any credibility, let's assume for a minute it does, when does this flight from our heritage stop? What is the cost to our self esteem when we concede (or sit silently by) when the implicit message is that there is something wrong with us?
