TUPELO – Tupelo High will take the school to the Haven Acres neighborhood next week, the first of what could be a series of traveling open houses.

As part of a pilot program, the school is holding an open house at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Haven Acres Community Center, where the Boys and Girls Club meets.

“We just know some people can’t come to an open house at school,” said Tupelo High School math teacher Tracy Mallard, who is part of a community outreach committee.

School administrators and faculty will talk with parents about subject area tests, ACT test dates, graduation requirements and new policies, said Principal Mac Curlee.

The Tuesday event is focused on the Haven Acres neighborhood in south Tupelo.

“Depending on how things turn out at Haven Acres, we’d like to do them in other parts of the city,” Mallard said.

Harvard education professor and retired Boston Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Payzant shared the idea of community open houses as a way to engage parents and students with Tupelo educators last spring, Curlee said.

“We want to see what kind of success we can have,” Curlee said.

I'm thinking any new policy that the new Superintendant might try would have more chance of having its desired effect if THS were to appoint a new principal. Mr Curlee has shown a lack of understanding of parents' 'need to know' and to follow up on concerns voiced by parents...I have heard this from other parents as well...Coach Stratton would seem to be a good candidate for the principal position considering his past success with young people but I honestly know nothing about Mr Strattons administrative acumen...I think we just need a change...after all, change is good--right?
