TUPELO – Authorities are investigating why a family pet on Tuesday attacked an 18-month-old girl, who afterward required dozens of stitches to her face.

The incident happened at a home on Feemester Lake Road when the girl wandered outside and tried to pet a pit bull chained to a post.

Although the dog belonged to the family, it had spent the past several months in another home in Saltillo, said Tupelo-Lee Humane Society Investigator Jimmy Shelton.

“We’re trying to pinpoint whether the dog was being abused or being used as a guard dog or a fighting dog,” said Shelton, who is working with the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.

Shelton emphasized that while pit bulls have a reputation as dangerous, any animal can inflict damage, especially those who have been mistreated. The lesson from this week’s tragedy, he said, isn’t that pit bulls are bad; it’s that children must be closely watched at all times.

After the attack, the dog was taken by its owner to the Saltillo Small Animal Hospital and euthanized.

The girl was reportedly released from North Mississippi Medical Center and is recovering at home.

i agree with you, gamezone. i owned a toy poodle for 17yrs., and at times she was as mean as any dog could ever be, bit me countless times through the years. by nature, a poodle is more vicious than a pit. these dogs have a bad reputation, but viciousness is not their true nature, it is how they're trained.

I support treating all animals with respect and believe pit bulls can be great pets. But there needs to be regulation on owning this breed. Unless the media just refuses to report other dog breed attacks, pit bull attacks make up >90% of all attacks. That can't be just a coincidence. These dogs should be registered, and owners pay an annual fee to have one that is not spayed or neutered!

It's very good that they don't blame the breed of the dog for what happened. I think they should have let the dog live and euthanized the parents. Who lets an 18 month old stay unattended long enough to leave the house and go try to pet a dog on a chain? All dogs can bite, especially ones that are chained up and haven't got the option of running away from what's bothering them. No small child should ever be unattended around dogs of any sort, ever.

People should seriously have to pass an IQ test before having kids... or grandkids apparently. I agree that this shouldn't be a "pit-bull's are evil" kind of thing... More that this family is STUPID.

Thank you to Emily Le Coz for reporting this in a fair and honest way with out going down that "All pit bulls are EVIL" path.

I hope the child recovers well and that more can be found out about the situation so that hopefully a repeat accident can be avoided.

I encourage all families with both children and pets to read this Humane Society of the US article - http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/selecting_the_right_pet_for_your_family_and_making_the_introduction.html

THIS IS SUCH A TRAGIC THING THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. FIRST OF ALL THE CHILD SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN IN A POSITION TO HAVE BEEN NEAR THE DOG. SECOND THE DOG DID WHAT HE WAS PROBALY TAUGHT TO DO! I HAD A PIT AND SHE WAS THE MOST GENTLE THING. THESE DOGS ARE BEING RAISED AND OWNED FOR THE WRONG REASONS!I HAVE A RAT TERRIER THAT WILL BITE YOU QUICKER THAN MY PIT WOULD. AND IT"S BECAUSE HE IS PROTECTIVE OF HIS FAMILY. NOW BECAUSE OF THIS THIS CHILD WILL BE HVE A FACE THAT WILL BE SCARED FOR LIFE, PLUS SHE WILL ALWAYS BE SCARED OF DOGS AND SHE COULD HAVE LOST HER LIFE. THESE PEOPLE NEED TO STOP MISTREATING THESE DOGS. THEY ARE VERY LOYAL TO THEIR OWNERS.
