STARKVILLE — The state Tax Commission is still considering a Starkville's proposal to allow Sunday sales of alcohol in restaurants and clubs, commission spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury told the Associated Press Wednesday.

Waterbury said the commission made a preliminary decision Tuesday to deny Starkville's request, but reopened discussion of the issue on Wednesday. She said a final decision has not been made, and the commission meets again in two weeks.

The ABC office Wednesday rejected a request to allow restaurants to sell wine and liquor by the glass on Sundays, Ward 5 Alderman Jeremiah Dumas said this morning. Grocery stores and convenience stores still will be allowed to sell beer, however, as the ABC office only controls the liquor and wine sales, Dumas said.

Restaurants also will be able to sell beer by the glass.

Dumas was still waiting this morning to hear why the ABC office rejected the request.

“We don’t know why,” Dumas said. “We’re waiting to hear official word from ABC. We know we were turned down, but we don’t know the reasons yet. Now we’re going to have to formulate a response depending on what their reasons are.”

All these archaic blue laws and dry counties just makes drunk driving skyrocket. When I lived in Itawamba county, which is dry, people still drank like fish, they just drove to Lee county half crocked when they ran out, instead of being able to walk to the corner store, or catch a quick ride with a friend. Just because they sell alcohol on Sunday, and you don't like it, doesn't mean you have to drink it. Let the people who want to drink boost the economy...whatever day of the week they like.

What does it matter to the state if the city wants to sell liquior? The ABC needs to be took down, hell they shouldn't even be allowed to run the liquior warehouse.
