JACKSON — An attorney says she worries low-income clients will suffer because North Mississippi Rural Legal Services plans to eliminate some staff jobs and restructure others.

Nebra Porter of West Point said Friday the agency's board is expected to lay off all six of its paralegals Saturday because of a budget shortfall. Porter said she and most of the other staff attorneys will be limited to helping clients over the telephone rather than in the courtroom.

North Mississippi Rural Legal Services serves 39 counties.

Executive director Ben Cole did not return calls to The Associated Press on Thursday and Friday. He told the Daily Times Leader in West Point this week that layoffs are unavoidable because funding was cut this year from $700,000 to $80,000.
