JACKSON — Mississippi's personnel system has been asked to adjust the pay scale of Highway Patrol troopers who would have been denied overtime because of a gubernatorial veto.

Rep. Johnny Stringer, D-Montrose, and Sen. Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, chairmen of their respective appropriations committees, asked the state Personnel Board to approve supplemental pay to troopers who work 171 hours a month.

The money would come from $3 million lawmakers approved for the Department of Public Safety this year.

Gov. Haley Barbour had vetoed the overtime provision. Stringer said the Personnel Board has agreed to the action, which was "a way to get by the veto."

Public Safety Commissioner Steve Simpson said he plans to adjust the pay scale.
