JACKSON — Former Mississippi State University president Donald Zacharias remained hospitalized Wednesday after falling and hitting his head last week.

Patrice Guilfoyle, a spokeswoman for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, said Zacharias was in good condition, meaning he was stable and conscious. Citing patient privacy, Guilfoyle said UMC could not reveal other details about his condition.

Roy Ruby, a former interim president at MSU, told the Starkville Rotary Club on Monday that Zacharias had fallen and hit his head. Zacharias has multiple sclerosis for more than a decade.

Zacharias was MSU president from 1985-97. When he retired, he was the second longest-serving leader of the land-grant university that was founded in Starkville in 1878.

My son(about 10 years at that time) saw Dr. Zacharias in the MSU Bookstore before a football game. Dr. Zacharias made him feel he was only the best 10 year in world. I will never forget him for the time he took with us in the early 90's.
