WEST POINT — City officials in West Point will soon start searching for a new police chief after firing Steve Bingham, who plans to appeal the decision.

The West Point Board of Mayor and Selectmen voted on Aug. 11 to replace Bingham. The vote was taken in an executive session and the reason for the move was not released.

West Point Chief Administrative Officer Randy Jones says he has received Bingham's written request for an appeal. Bingham has declined to comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, West Point Mayor Scott Ross says he and Jones will write a job description and advertise the position.

Ross said the police department is capable of operating without a chief temporarily under the guidance of two deputy chiefs.
