Aldermen voted 4-3 on Tuesday night to ask the State Tax Commission to authorize restaurants to sell alcohol - including beer, light wine, wine and liquor - on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
During two public hearings on the matter, opponents cited religious, moral and public-safety grounds for their opposition. However, proponents emphasized economic benefits.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau advisory board stated in a letter to aldermen, "New retail businesses and restaurants are sure to be interested in Starkville, MS, once this progressive and forward-thinking ordinance is passed."
State Tax Commission approval is considered likely. Assuming it is granted, Starkville will join West Point and Columbus in having legalized Sunday alcohol service.
