Democratic U.S. Rep. Travis Childers says he would not vote for a House health care reform bill in its current form.

The north Mississippi freshman lawmaker told more than 7,200 listeners during a town hall teleconference Tuesday night that private insurance companies should compete for business to decrease health costs.

Childers said companies should stop denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. He said he wants to see details before deciding whether he'd support a mandate for all Americans to have some type of health insurance.

Childers said he opposes any public funding for abortion and any public health coverage for people who are in the U.S. illegally.

He also said it is a "myth" that health care legislation would require people to go before "death panels" to discuss end-of-life issues.

Rep. Childers has taken the approach that is in the best interests of everyone. I applaud his stance. With a war on two fronts, a financial mess, and a terrible deficit, this country cannot afford another big, runaway government spending program.

The average person in Mississippi makes about $34,000 annually. The average cost of health insurance is $14,700 annually.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could abandon this "health business" and go back to real "health care"?

Won't be voting for you again Mr Childers.. go be a republican.

I will stay home.
