Tupelo’s entry into the 2009 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest in Memphis claimed the top prize.

Bill Cherry, a 44-year-old from Collinsville, Ill., beat out 19 competitors late Thursday to win the title of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist of 2009.

During the 2009 Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival in June, Cherry earned the right to compete in Memphis.

Plans are in motion for Cherry to perform in Tupelo in Janurary as part of a 75th anniversary celebration of Elvis’ birth.

“He represented Tupelo in a first class manner,” said Debbie Brangenberg, director of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association, which oversees the Elvis Festival.
