Lee County Schools Superintendent Mike Scott said Wednesday that a small number of swine flu cases have been confirmed in two Lee County Schools.

"The number is minimal right now," Scott said.

The confirmed cases are at Verona Elementary and Guntown Middle schools. The district is asking parents to make sure sick children – especially those with flu-like symptoms – stay home until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours.

There's no need for panic, and the arrival of swine flu in schools is not unexpected, school and health officials say. The novel H1N1 flu has not been any more severe than seasonal flu.

School officials are taking preventive measures, and there are no plans to close school barring widespread absences.

IMO delaying the start of school should have been the FIRST precaution taken.

I agree to panic will solve no problems. After 31 yeards in teaching and administration I do know this is no normal year for flu of anykind to start this early. Extra precautions must be taken to guard the health of staff and students.
