JACKSON — The Mississippi Department of Health is reporting five new human cases of West Nile virus.

The confirmed cases were in DeSoto, Forrest, Hinds and Rankin counties, bringing the year's total to 11. One person has died from the virus.

There were 65 confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne illness in the state in 2008 with three deaths.

Officials encourage residents to take precautions, including removing sources of standing water, avoiding mosquito-prone areas, wearing protective clothing and applying a mosquito repellent that contains DEET.
