UPDATE: Starkville tourism officials want Sunday alcohol

STARKVILLE — Tourism officials in Starkville are supporting a proposed ordinance permitting Sunday alcohol sales in the city.

The Starkville Visitors and Convention Council agreed Wednesday to draft a letter in support of the ordinance. The letter will be sent to elected city officials.

The first of two public hearings on Sunday alcohol sales took place this week at city hall.

A second hearing is scheduled to take place during the Board of Aldermen's next meeting Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Businesses and restaurants cannot sell alcohol on Sunday, according to the city's existing alcohol ordinance.

Several city aldermen are against the hearings, saying they oppose Sunday alcohol sales because it is a moral, religious and safety issue.

jasonlp, I am not saying it should be outlawed(even though that would be nice) I am saying that it should be banned in public buildings like smoking is banned in public buildings in certain cities.

It is not illegal to DRINK on Sunday, just illegal to SELL alcohol. If you choose to drink on Sunday, then buy it on Saturday.

Now, I am sure your argument will be that you would like to have a beer or whatever with your meal at a restaurant of your choice on Sunday. I feel that you do not have to go to a restaurant on Sunday, you have 6 other days to drink at that establishment.

Loss of revenue?? if you look around Tupelo, there is not a loss of revenue. The "bars" may not be open, but the restaurant is not losing any revenue on Sundays.

The six days it is already allowed is to many. Oh yes, approve it so there will be more drunks driving and killing innocent people! Are you kidding me? Drinking is not a necessity of life. I think it should be outlawed in public places just like cigarettes. I was in Chili's one day at noon and this lady had her 8-10 year old daughter with her. The lady ordered a drink and the girl wanted the same with no alcohol. Boy wasn't she a fine role model.
