BOONEVILLE – An abused horse rescued from a Booneville ranch this week will be rehabilitated, but hundreds of others still need help.

Sheila Horton, founder of the nonprofit Have A Heart Horse Rescue, said in the past few months she has seen at least 500 abused or neglected horses in Northeast Mississippi.

The most recent was an approximately 2-year-old mare confiscated Thursday evening from a Booneville resident. The Booneville Police Department responded to a call that a man was beating the horse with a baseball bat. He was charged with felony malicious injury to a livestock, said Capt. Michael Ramey.

Ramey didn’t release the name of the suspect, but Horton said it is Michael Clifton. The phone book lists a Michael Clifton at 4 County Road 1380. A woman who answered the phone at the residence Friday said Clifton was not home, and he did not immediately return a call for comment.

According to the Prentiss County Jail, Clifton was released on bond.

Horton now has possession of the horse, who suffers from numerous cuts, bruises and lacerations all over its face and body. Horton said it will recover physically but will probably have emotional scars the rest of its life.

“I just truly want everyone to realize how much abuse and neglect there is out there,” said Horton, whose operation is based in both Prentiss and Carroll counties. “And I can’t help all of these horses without some help from the public.”

For that reason, Horton is launching a food donation program. Anyone with extra hay is encouraged to donate it to Have A Heart Horse Rescue so it can be distributed to malnourished horses throughout Northeast Mississippi.

The program will feed horses allowed to remain with their owners while permitting Horton to focus on the more dire cases, such as the Booneville horse.

Sam6, he does have children. He has 4 or 5 young boys at this address plus a child someplace else. He has been evil all his life, having a Ted Bundy cunning personality and at some point he will murder someone if he is not stopped. You know it starts with animals and progresses. He does have a rap sheet with one offense being removed if he did so and so. Well he never did so and so but it was removed so he is really on his 4th arrest that I know of. I take offense to NewYorkersWatching who knows nothing about this case except for what she reads in the paper. Leave it to the people who know these caring folks and the cruel man that Michael is.

MsYankee, you are totally oblivious and outright heartless if you think that these horse rescues (or any animal rescue) are trying to collect money so they can "have a great living". Do a little research and you will see THOUSANDS of pictures of starved abused horses, there are rescues all over the country that can't even keep up. look at the pics on haveaheart and tell me someone shouldn't be allowed to enter a property with starving horses on it. You need to educate yourself. I am involved with a rescue in NY and believe me, we are ALL WATCHING THIS CASE so I hope the authorities handle it the right way and give this abuser some nice time in a cell to ponder his atrocities. Maybe you should volunteer at a rescue and muck for a few days and see what a GREAT living it is!

I believe there is a "special" hell in store for anyone who can beat a helpless animal, be it a horse, dog, cat, etc. Those who do should be forever barred from owning a pet ever again, for their heart is as black as sin. Shelia Horton is an angel here on Earth for taking care of those wonderful animals. May God bless you, Ms. Horton. Keep up the good work.

OOOPs here's the link of several horses who have passed away due to people not taking care of their "investment". Some of these horses were top Western Pleasure show horses, one was a registered Arabian. The bloodline of a horse doesn't save it from abuse or neglect.

Also, Mrs. Horton only goes in and takes a horse when she is called by local law enforcement. It is then up to the court, not Mrs. Horton, whether or not the horse goes back to the owner.

To msyankee,

Yes, Mrs. Horton does have pictures of all the abused horses. You can go to this link that I developed to show legislatures the true picture of what's going on with horses in our state. These are just a very few, some from Have A Heart, some are from the MS Animal REscue LEague and other horse rescues in our state. It's an expensive heart and back breaking job to be in. I oversee the web site Mississippihorses.org and you can go to the available horses page and see all the great horses that have been rehabilitated and are now in need of a home. The adoption fee is $300 but hundreds more dollars are put into these horses to save their lives. You can go to Twelve Oak Farm and view their horses in Rehab if you believe horses only need grass this time of year. Four foals have been almost starved to death because of that attitude. If you're going to own a horse please research what is involved because it takes a lot more than just grass to keep them alive and healthy.

I wonder if Ms Horton has pictures of all the abused horses. Does she have proof or just her word? Does she trespass to gather this information? Ms Horton does not have the right to come on your property and she has no law enforement authority. I love animals as much as anyone and do not want to see them abused, however I do question those who start non-profits and exadggerates the problem in order to tug the heart strings of people for donations just to make a great living. Actually I thought horses eat grass this time of year. My advice to horse owners...put up no trespassing signs and do not allow anyone you do not know onto your property. A horse is a huge investment and i do not think that many people abuse their investments.

I was thinking the same thing. Beat him with a bat for a while and see how he likes it. People who are cruel to animals will be cruel to humans. I think the penalty for animal cruelty should be much stiffer!

too bad the punishment cannot mirror the crime, he could be with out food for a period of time and then beaten with a baseball bat also. Hope he has no children, doesn't need to be allowed to breed, just more of the same.
