We must pass health care reform now for the sake of people in need

President Obama has said we are at a time of great challenge. We face wars abroad and a struggling economy at home. But with great challenges, come great opportunities. The problems we face require more than the usual Washington quick-fix, they require fundamental reform.

There are few better examples of the need for fundamental reform than in our health care system.

Our health care system is broken. Health insurance premiums are going through the roof and the number of uninsured persons is rising. Forty-five million Americans don’t have insurance, either because they can’t afford the high premiums or because they were denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Many families are loosing their choice of doctors due to insurance cutbacks – some are loosing the choice to even visit a doctor when they’re sick. Elderly couples across Mississippi are being forced to choose between buying groceries or the medications they need.

We’ve all heard stories from friends and families who have been affected by the high costs of health care. In Mississippi, nearly 20 percent of our population is uninsured. In the last year, 37.1 percent of Mississippians under the age of 65 were uninsured, including 75.6 percent who went more than six months without insurance. All of these averages are much higher than the national average, including the number of uninsured children.

Just over 11 percent of American children are uninsured. In Mississippi, that number is more than 16 percent. Part of the blame can be laid at the feet of Gov. Haley Barbour who has forced staggering budget cuts to children insurance programs.

Turning a blind eye to so many people in need is not the mark of high morality. We must reach out and give a hand up to those in need.

But reforming the health care system isn’t just a moral imperative, it’s a fiscal imperative. State and local governments are facing cutbacks across the board and can no longer bare the burden of emergency care for the uninsured. Businesses, large and small, are struggling to balance their books and are forced to cut jobs because they can’t afford the rising cost of insuring their employees.

In Mississippi, less than 30 percent of small businesses offer health care to their employees. And the state cannot overcome the deficit of health care spending. Mississippi currently spends more than 18 percent of its state product on health related expenditures. Considering the budget problems we face today, it is unrealistic to think we can continue to fund health care costs at such a high percentage.

The burden is no less on insured families, either. In Mississippi, 30 percent of families spend more than 10 percent of their paycheck on health care cost. The average annual premium for insured families is more than $10,000. That is a burden too high for Mississippi working families.

Reforming the system will undoubtedly be a huge undertaking. Health care is an issue that affects every American and the only way we can successfully change the system is by bringing all voices to the table. That’s why President Obama will tackle this in the same way he has taken on all the major challenges of his administration – by listening to voices on all sides of the debate.

We must move beyond the divisive arguments that have plagued past attempts at reform. Americans can no longer bear the burden of a broken health care system. We must act now to enact reform that works for families, local governments, and businesses alike.

Awe...so sorry I typed in the wrong name. I'm suprised you even caught it!

Want to see what Universal Health Care is really like? Read this article from June 30, 2009 regarding Canada's wonderful system (which is where the leadership of your party is looking to imitate)

www.wellandtribune.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1636504

Can you imagine waiting in the ER for 25.5 hours?? I can't wait to wait, and wait, and wait! Oh...and lose my money!

ok...so the first part was hilarious...I'll give you that.

No I do not believe that about children. They can go straight to the Health Department and get well baby care, WIC, etc. However, I do not believe that their parents' should be off the hook as far as their responsibility. Nor should I be on the hook to keep paying for them for the rest of their lives on Universal Health Care. That's where personal responsibility comes in...

You see this is exactly what I have been trying to say...play the emotion card, call me heartless, etc. You will learn in life that flattery will get you no where...lol

Also, yes...I know what medicaid is...and yes I know people who need it. I do not mind helping out with a little tax dollars going to those who REALLY need it. However, we do not have the money to pay for an additional 45 million people to be on a program such as Medicaid. And I do not want some politician to force me into it by raising my taxes.

The answer to your question regarding the elderly is an absolute YES. Maybe you need a lesson on Medicaid: Medicaid only pays for so much medication per month, so when an elderly patient needs more than the allotted amount, they have to pay out of pocket or a family member has to buy it for them, which is done for my grandmother every month on top of the money taken from me to provide the allotted amount to someone else's elderly family member.

It probably won't be there for me when I'm elderly, but if it is I will certainly use it considering I will be paying for it for the next oh...39 years. So again there I'll be paying for me and people I have no resposibility to.

You know I do not have the need to defend myself to you but just so you'll know: I do not have anxiety, phobias, depression, anger, emotional tension, definitely not early menapause, or chronic complaining. I do have stress and worry for my three foster children and my country and fear of God.

Of course you want me to pick another fight, just so you can get another entitlement program started and take more money from people who aren't looking for a handout!

Oh I better stop...I'm gonna... have.... a... coronary...rofl

Hey Common Sense Man,

Take it easy man....all this "common sense" of yours is gonna kill you from heart disease, stroke or aneurism as a result of a combined mix of PASSION, anxiety, stress, worry, phobias, depression, anger, emotional tension, early menopause, fear, chronic complaining....to name a few.

You will find yourself being UNINSURABLE and a prime candidate for ObamaCare if you don't find a lil comPASSION in your heart.

You believe that a child should that does NOT have the ability to purchase or access to health insurance should ONLY be allowed to EMERGENCY CARE? wow...scares us all a lot to know you vote.

Are there any elderly that are on waiting lists, refused treatment or subject to a goverment beurocrat directing which doctor to see while being covered by Medicare? The answer is NO.

You do realize that Medicare is a SOCIAL INSURANCE PROGRAM administered by the U.S. government, providing universal health care insurance to people?

I suppose that you will decline Medicare's UNIVERSAL health care coverage and benefits? Do you have a family member that is benefiting from Medicare's UNIVERSAL health care coverage? Surely not....wouldnt want you to be guilty of hypocrisy.

Again, take it easy Common Sense Man and pick another fight.

That's Funny...they're certainly not living up to that definition. They probably like to think they are, but definitely not.

Let's see...individual freedom? You mean the kind where they take my money and give to someone else who refuses to work? Or shove Universal Health Care down the throats of taxpayers, who'll have to pay for bad behavior? You see, with individual freedom comes individual responsibility. You can't have one with the other.

Greater Intellectual liberty...you mean the kind that think they are intellects because they graduated from Harvard or Yale but lack any common sense? They may actually be so stupid they think they are smart...lol

Greater participation in government...yeah, participation in every program paid by tax payers they can sink their teeth into.

Constitution...you people wouldn't know the constitution if it took a big chomp on your rear!

You proved my point; "...reforms designed to secure..." That's right you want to reform the constitution to say and mean what you want it to. How about fighting to keep people from trouncing on it?

Well...at least you're honest...I'll give it to you. You didn't play on emotions to get support...you simply told it like it was...reform the constitution...scares me a lot to know you vote! UGH

LIBERAL-definition:

In politics, the term "liberal" refers to a political party associated with the ideals of individual freedom, greater intellectual liberty, greater individual participation in government, and constitutional, political, and administrative reforms designed to secure these objectives, such as the U.S. Constitution.

Hmmmm???.....I believe that I can live with that and I also tend to support politicians that embrace that sort of ideology.

Cheers to Liberals~!

Caesar,

Why do you think anyone has the right to tell me that I have to pay for someone's behavior? That's one of the main reasons some people won't get behind Universal Health Care. Let me give you an example: Homosexuals want the gov't to stay out of their lives, bedrooms, etc. That's perfectly fine with me, however, when their actions cause them to end up with HIV/AIDS they expect the taxpayers to foot the bill for their treatment? Other examples would be smokers, people who are eating their way to an early grave, etc. You want to put me on the hook to pay for their behavior, and if I can help it, you won't succeed. I know for a fact that NO ONE can legally be refused necessary medical treatment in this country. Walk into the local emergency room/hospital and read the signs. I was just at Baptist in Oxford and saw them myself! Why does everyone think that Universal Health Care is going to be soooo great? You mentioned about all the other countries that have healcare for everyone...truly they do, but that doesn't mean it is good healthcare. Why do some Canadians and Brits come the U.S. to get treatment when they get their healthcare for free where they live? Well, I guess that's because their medical care is sooo WONDERFUL! Well at least they have it, right?

Maybe you should try talking to someone who lives in a country where Universal Health Care is a reality. Maybe they could tell you the horror stories of waitng lists, rationing when the funds are not there, sitting with their grandmother after she has been refused cancer treatment or surgery because the younger people are more important, etc. I know, I know, I am playing on your emotions, but sometimes we have to do that to try to get through to you libs!

You mentioned the skyrocketing costs of health care. Do you really think the gov't is going to be able to control those costs? EVERYTHING they do falls apart and ALWAYS costs way more than predicted.

Over the last decade, the U.S. has has witnessed skyrocketing costs & health insurance premiums rising by double digit percentage points over the past five years. That's 2-3 times the rate of inflation! Due to out of control costs, there's been an enormous rise in uninsured Americans.

This problem may have been a problem only to low-income families but MORE & MORE middle-class families are directly affected too. Any person is just a pink-slip or tragic diagnosis away from becoming UNINSURED!

The lack of health care for all in America is fundamentally a MORAL ISSUE. The U.S. is the ONLY industrialized nation that does not have universal health care. (defined as a basic guarantee of health care to all of its citizens).

While other nations have declared health care to be a basic right, the U.S. treats health care as a priviledge only to those who can afford it. In this sense, health care in the U.S. is treated as an economic good such as a TV or DVD player, not as a social or public good. (so terrible)

In contrast to common stereotypes, 80% of the 45 million Americans who lack health insurance are hardworking Americans who are employed or come from working families.

Universal Health Care Reform is coming and will succeed THANKS to support from respectful and progressive leaders such as Jamie Franks and others like him willing to do something for the good of common man instead of the good of a fat cat lobbyist representing a failed but greedy health care industry.

As for you PASSIONATE right wing radicals and nonsense minded, say NO to everything crybabies....looks like you'll only be left behind to argue among yourselves because the so-called LIBERALS are moving forward with the majority of Americans that finally realize UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE REFORM is the right thing to do.

To: Mopar Man

I do not think Mr. Franks will be speaking at a TEA party...lol...it's libs like him that call fiscal conservatives racists. Like I said before, they name call when they lose the arguements and play on our emotions to get support and votes.

Thanks for the name calling....I know when I hear that from a lib, i've won the arguement! By the way, it's definitely not anger, it's passion for my country that you libs are trying to destroy! If you think calling me hateful will silence me, you're dead wrong...i'll just get louder...

My health care isn't in the toilet...I go to my doctor when I get sick. He doesn't give me anything for free...I'm not looking for a handout.

Again, my health care is just fine to me, and that's why I am trying to stop this mess called Obama Care, because that's the way I want to keep it! I do not want anyone ruining it for me and my family. I am already footing the bill for those less fortunate through medicaid, welfare, etc. I do not want to add 45 million other people to the list and then, on top of that, lose my coverage to the gov't which CAN'T RUN ANYTHING!

Again, this is PASSION!

Thanks Jamie Franks! (sounds like a great campaign slogan for governor) I enjoyed reading your comments and look forward to many more.

By the way Jamie, what are YOU gonna be doing in 2012? Perhaps we may be calling on you to serve again.

Pay no attention to Ignorance Man. Oops,I meant Common Sense Man's slobbering defacation of ignorance and hate. Sounds like a typical bittered and battered Republican to me. Funny how desperate and angry sounding one becomes when realizing their lil ball of hate political party continues to dwindle in numbers. Remember, Republicans invented and created "politics of fear". It seems that last year the topic of universal health care was debated and last November support for universal health care won.

The truth is that America's health care situation is in the toilet and we have no choice but to reform it in some manner. U.S. health care ranks about 37 in the world....behind a long list of universal health care providers.

Seriously? Stop pushing your liberal agenda by trying to use useless statistics to scare people into supporting this mess of a health care plan. Maybe you need to look at what is causing the cost increases in the health care system before you try to get us to believe the gov't can fix it. Yeah Right! Maybe you should go and sit in your local emergency room and look and see who is NOT, I repeat who is NOT getting turned away. You see, I can see right through you trying to play on our emotions to back this horrible attack on liberty. I have not ever seen one child who was refused medical treatment. Or for that matter, not ONE illegal immigrant. You or no one else in this country has the authority (read your constitution) to tell me I have to pay for somone else's choices (i.e. smoking, obesity, etc.) You try to play on our emotions by using children as an example, but I can certainly see right through that! By the way, we already have universal health care...it's called Medicaid. One more thing to add; maybe you should look into the reason behind Gov. Barbour having to cut spending so much. Here's an idea...stop letting people abuse the system (make them pass a drug test before they can get food stamps, welfare, etc.) Don't give illegal immigrants handouts, get them out of the schools, make them pay taxes and fund their own childrens' education. We live in a free country. Not one where people like you try to tell us how we should be. What are you libs going to say when the private medical industry tanks? Actually, I think that's probably what you want! How much you want to bet you probably support this crazy Cap & Trade too??? I'm sure when that back fires on you, you libs will try to find someway to blame everyone else. (you know when everyone is paying $2,000 more per year for electricty)

I would also like to see you right an opinion piece as to why we have veterans coming home from war who are homeless. I bet I won't see you trying to get funding for them, you know since you are not after their vote! Before you continue complaining about the Horrible US Health Care System (you know the one Canadians come to to get care, even though Canada has NATIONAL HEALTH CARE) maybe you should fight to solve that problem!

Chairman Franks has delivered another installment of the usual Democratic boiler-plate. "Applause line," I think the journalists call it: Tell the poor dofuses (dofii?) what they want to hear, and govern as usual.

People who believe that there's any real difference in the Democrats and the Republicans are the same people who keep responding to the Publisher's Sweepstakes mail-outs, visiting Tunica, and responding to spam e-mail solicitations.

Wake up, fools, and vote Libertarian before your last freedom is gone.
