BOONEVILLE - Pontotoc's bats produced 54 hits in four games of the NEMCABB Tournament, but it was five by Tupelo that made the difference Tuesday.

The Golden Wave scored eight runs on five hits, including a triple by Sanders West, in the fourth inning on its way to an 8-7 victory against the Warriors in the championship game.

"Pontotoc can swing it," Tupelo coach Gary Enis said. "I'm proud of how our guys battled and stayed with it. We found a way to win."

Pontotoc took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on five hits off Tupelo's West, but the senior right-hander blanked them through the fourth before giving way to relievers Gabe Richey and Ben Hudspeth.

Prior to its big inning, Tupelo's bats had produced just two hits off Pontotoc's John Michael Hannon.

West opened the Wave's inning with a single. Brandon Reddout produced the first two runs with a single to the gap in right-center field. Hudspeth and Connor Carothers had RBI singles and West a run-scoring triple in the inning.

"That inning turned the momentum in our favor," Enis said.

Pontotoc rallied with a run in the fifth and added three in the six on back-to-back doubles by Jake Smithey and Blake Littlejohn.

"We've had no problem swinging the bats," Pontotoc coach Phil Webb said. "We hit the ball well this tournament. I think we kind of ran out of gas, although we did come back that last inning."

Tupelo escaped the sixth and saw the game end - time limit - with a ground out. The Warriors had the potential tying run at second.

"I was proud of the way we hung on there at the end," Enis said.

Tupelo reached the finals with a 2-0 win against Oxford earlier in the day while Pontotoc beat Tishomingo County 10-3 prior to the title game.
