Repairs are set for treatment plant

* Airport fuel farm is not complete.

PITTSBORO - A long-festering problem with the sewage treatment plant and sewer lines that serve the courthouse will soon be corrected.

County engineer Chodie Myers told supervisors last week that the Mississippi Development Authority has approved funding for a plan that will install a new sewer line and pumps and move waste from the courthouse to the treatment plant used by the county jail.

The grant would cover the full project cost estimate of almost $88,000.

Because the project is being treated as an emergency, the normal bid process was bypassed. Myers presented a quote from Double S Construction of Grenada for almost $89,000, which the board accepted.

Myers also told the board that the new fuel farm at the airport is not yet ready to be accepted as complete.

The fuel farm has had circuit breaker problems, Myers said, and new parts are on order. He said the contract on the project also specifies that monitoring software be installed on a county computer, and that someone must be trained to use the software before the contract can be closed out.

In other business:

* The board approved a change in the plans for the courthouse grounds to move a drainage ditch away from Highway 9.

When the old courthouse is demolished and moved westward away from the highway, about 30 feet, the drainage sluice will be moved six to 10 feet to the west.

* Terry Fales' contract to serve another year as director of the Calhoun Economic Development Association was approved.

* Supervisors postponed action to hire a nurse for the Sheriff's Department until a facility to house state inmates is completed. Having a nurse available to serve the state inmates is a requirement of the state inmate housing program.

State inmates have been withdrawn from Calhoun County until the new facility is built.

* The board voted 4-1 to continue participating in the state beaver control program. Gwin Longest of District 3 voted against.

* Bids on interest rates for lease-purchases of a backhoe and a garbage truck were revoked after closer inspection showed they were not firm bids, and therefore illegal.

Hancock Bank was selected from among new quotes to finance the purchases. Hancock bid 3.27 percent on both vehicles.

* The board passed a resolution in honor of the 858th Horizontal Construction Co., based at the Calhoun City National Guard Armory, which is deploying to Iraq July 17.

* The county road register was reaffirmed.

* Travel was approved for an elections seminar, a justice court seminar and the Mississippi Association of Supervisors convention.

* The board took no action on a presentation on supplemental insurance.
