The Mississippi Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to Peters' irrevocable resignation from the practice of law. In December, Peters petitioned for disbarment over an undisclosed complaint before the Mississippi Bar.
Peters was district attorney for 30 years before retiring in 2001.
The Bar said Peters was admitting guilt to a complaint. The Bar says such complaints are confidential.
It's not clear whether the complaint was related to a bribery investigation that has snagged some of Mississippi's most prominent lawyers, including Richard "Dickie" Scruggs.
No charges have been filed against Peters. He has denied involvement in any scheme.
