UPDATE: State lawmakers return, but no sign of budget deal

JACKSON — Mississippi lawmakers returned to the Capitol on Wednesday with no indication that they'd finish writing a $5 billion state budget before their midnight deadline.

Legislators are feeling pressure because the new state fiscal year begins July 1.

If the regular session ends with no budget deal, Republican Gov. Haley Barbour will call lawmakers back sometime this month for a special session, and he will have more control over what they consider.

A special session will cost the state roughly $13,000 more per day than a regular session, because every legislator would receive $75 a day in special session pay.

The House on Wednesday tried — and failed — to adopt a resolution that would've extended the session.

I agree with the previous two post. The state government needs to wake up and get something done about this budget so these school districts can know what they are going to be able to instead of twittling their thumbs. This is absolutely ridiculous to be waiting this long on a state budget.

I agree. Am I the only one who thinks these people do not care about anyone in the state other than themselves. Bryant and Nunlee should have to look for new jobs after the next election. I will not vote for either man for any office.

no surprise there. this is KILLING educators in the state. most teachers haven't even signed contracts next year because of this. and some who want to move are left in limbo because of districts not knowing what they can or cannot spend.
