Hunting seasons approved this month by the Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks:
RABBIT
Season: Oct. 17-Feb. 28, statewide.
Limit: 8 daily.
BOBWHITE QUAIL
Season: Nov. 26-March 6, statewide.
Limit: 8 daily.
SQUIRREL
Zone 1 (areas north of U.S. Highway 82, plus all of Washington and Sunflower counties): Oct. 3-Feb. 28. Youth: Sept. 26-Oct. 2.
Zone 2 (areas between U.S. Highways 82 and 84, and areas south of 84 that are west of Interstate 55): Oct. 17-Feb. 28. Youth: Oct. 10-Oct. 16.
Zone 3 (areas south of U.S. Highway 84 and east of I-55): Oct. 31-Feb. 28. Youth: Oct. 24-Oct. 30.
Limit: 8 daily, all zones.
FROG
2009 season: Ends Sept. 30. Bag limit: 25 per night.
2010 season: April 1-Sept. 30. Bag limit: 25 per night.
RACCOON
Early season: July 1- Sept. 30.
Limit: 1 per party per night.
OPOSSUM, RACCOON AND BOBCAT
Oct. 1-Oct. 30; for sport and food.
Limit: 5 per day, 8 per party.
Oct. 31-Feb. 28 for sport, food and pelt.
No limit.
TRAPPING
Statewide season: Nov. 1-Feb. 28. No limit.
TURKEY
2010 spring season: March 13-May 2, statewide except parts of Coahoma, Leflore and Sunflower counties and all of Quitman County.
Limit: 1 mature gobbler or a gobbler with a minimum 6-inch beard per day, 3 per season. Youths 15 and under are allowed 1 gobbler per season with any length beard in their 3-bird spring limit.
Youth season: March 6-12.
2009 fall season: Certain counties in Delta Zone, North-Central Zone and Southwestern Zone will have a fall season Oct. 15-Nov. 15 on private lands only. Landowners must apply for permits.
Limit: 2 turkeys of either sex per season. Contact Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks for fall season regulations.
DEER
Zone 1: Areas east of I-55 and north of I-20, plus areas south of I-20 and east of U.S. 61, excluding areas south of U.S. 84 and east of Mississippi Highway 35.
Zone 2: Areas south of U.S. 84 and east of Mississippi Highway 35.
Zone 3: Areas west of I-55 and north of I-20 and areas south of I-20 and west of U.S. 61.
Seasons for Zone 1 and Zone 3:
Archery: Oct. 1-Nov. 20.
Youth gun: Begins Nov. 14 and continues through Jan. 31, private lands only.
Gun with dog: Nov. 21-Dec. 1.
Primitive weapon: Dec. 2-15.
Gun without dog (still season): Dec. 16-23.
Gun with dog: Dec. 24-Jan. 20.
Primitive weapon/archery: Jan. 21-31 on private lands and open public lands.
Seasons for Zone 2:
Archery: Oct. 15-Nov. 20.
Youth gun: Begins Nov. 14 and continues through Feb. 15.
Gun with dog: Nov. 21-Dec. 1.
Primitive weapon: Dec. 2-15.
Gun without dog (still season): Dec. 16-23.
Gun with dog: Dec. 24-Jan. 20.
Primitive weapon/archery: Jan. 21-Feb. 15. Legal bucks only.
Legal bucks:
Zones 1-2: A legal buck is defined as having either a minimum inside spread of 10 inches OR a minimum main beam length of 13 inches.
Zone 3: A legal buck is defined as having either a minimum inside spread of 12 inches OR a minimum main beam length of 15 inches.
Limits: Daily: 1 legal buck and 1 antlerless deer per day. Children 15 and under are allowed to have 1 buck of any size antler in their season buck limit of 3.
Season: 3 legal bucks and 5 antlerless deer.
