TUPELO – The Memorial Day weekend produced the county’s first two homicide deaths since 2007.

Gary Smith, 20, was charged with DUI homicide in connection with the Saturday morning death of 43-year-old Carol Ross.

Ross was killed in a single-car accident on County Road 2442 between Saltillo and Guntown.

According to Sheriff Jim Johnson, Smith left the scene on foot after the accident and was later found at a residence in Saltillo.

Smith is said to have been driving the car when it flipped several times. Coroner Carolyn Gillentine said Ross was not wearing a seat belt.

Johnson claimed tests showed Smith over the legal alcohol limit.

His bond was set at $50,000.

Marcus D. Randle, 26, was charged with the Monday night shooting death of 67-year-old Walter Shumpert on County Road 154.

Johnson said deputies were dispatched to a residence in Shannon at 7:10 p.m. Monday. Shumpert was shot once in the chest and pronounced dead at North Mississippi Medical Center.

Johnson said Randle and a female turned themselves in to the sheriff’s department Tuesday morning. Two other men also were taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

Johnson said one or both could be charged in the case, but he did not specify what those charges could be.

Randle, Shumpert and several others reportedly were at the residence where the shooting occurred. Witnesses said the men got into an argument before the shooting.

Bond for Smith was expected to be set Wednesday.
