The Mississippi High School Activities Association has turned down an appeal by New Albany High School to overturn the outcome of last week’s Class 4A state golf tournament played at River Birch in Amory.

A protest was filed by New Albany following the final round of the tournament, which was won by Itawamba AHS, saying an IAHS golfer turned in an incorrect score and should have been disqualified.

The basis for this action centered around whether the golfer, Taylor Boggs, whiffed a shot or took a practice swing on a hole during his round.

The tournament committee, which included an official from the Mississippi Golf Association, ruled in favor of IAHS saying the weight of the evidence – according to USGA rule 34 3/4 – did not favor either competitor. In such a case, the benefit of doubt is given to the player accused of the infraction.
