Frank Melton
Melton died this past Thursday, less than two days after losing a Democratic primary in his bid for a second term in Mississippi's capital city. He was 60.
As co-owner of WLBT-TV, Melton became widely known in Mississippi starting in the 1980s for his television editorials in which he denounced drug dealers. He served as head of the state Bureau of Narcotics in the late 1990s and was elected mayor in 2003.
George Jones, owner of the private technical school Healthcare Institute, told The Clarion-Ledger on Monday that he admired Melton because the mayor was "full-throttle all the way until his death."
