PITTSBORO - County supervisors moved forward Friday with repairs and upgrades to the water and sewer treatment plants serving the jail and courthouse, to bring them into compliance with Department of Enviornmental Quality standards.

The board has applied for grants through the Mississippi Development Authority to fund the upgrades.

As part of that process, the board adopted several new policies required by MDA, including a fair housing resolution, a guarantee of opportunity for minority-owned businesses to bid on projects, a code of conduct and a maintenance resolution.

County engineer Chodie Myers the treatment plant paperwork and a number of other projects, as well.

The board also approved a contract for a security fence at the Calhoun County Airport, creation of a project fund for a road overlay in District 3 near Ellard; and programmed two bridges for replacement, on County Road 468 near Shady Grove Church, and a 150-foot bridge on County Road 365.

In other business:

* The board approved an interlocal agreement with the school district for paving in Calhoun City at the band hall and at the career-technical center.

* For $2500, enough panels will be bought to create 10 pens at the county show barn.

* No bids were received to construct a facility for state inmates at the Calhoun County Jail, so the board voted to readvertise.

* The county is no longer allowed to pay a public defender for each lunacy hearing, so Paul Moore Jr.'s public defender salary was raised by $2,600.

* Calhoun Economic Development Association director Terry Fales said work has not begun on drainage projects near United Chair because the Appalachian Regional Commission has not yet approved grants for the project.

* The board passed a resolution supporting reimbursement of funds paid for computerization of court records.
