JACKSON - Legislative negotiators have reached agreement to increase Mississippi's cigarette tax to 68 cents per pack.

House and Senate negotiators signed off on the increase Tuesday during a meeting at the state Capitol.

Mississippi's cigarette excise tax of 18 cents a pack is the third-lowest in the nation.

Legislators want to agree on a cigarette tax before they finish a state spending plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1. The full House and Senate are scheduled to return to the Capitol on May 6 to complete the budget.

The bill is House Bill 364.
