AMORY - Dr. Travis Manning Pierce, 85, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at the Oak Tree Plantation in Amory. He was born April 8, 1924, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to Marvin Travis and Ella Ophelia Robinson Pierce. He lived in several places before moving to Tupelo in 1932. He married Gene Stratton Carr in 1945 in Lincoln, Neb. He graduated from Tupelo High School and worked as a bookkeeper for Gulf Refining Company in Tupelo. He entered the Army Air Corps and received his pilot's wings on Sept. 8, 1944, at Luke Field, Phoenix, Ariz. After instructor's school, he trained for and became a B-17 first pilot and later a B-29 co-pilot. He served in the Air Corps until 1946. He later served at Keesler Field and then was assigned to Kearns, Utah.
After the war, he managed Joyce Optical Service for two years and he went on to attend the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis and received his Doctor of Optometry Degree. He established his practice in Amory for many years before forming a partnership with Dr. A.F. Hodges until his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amory, serving as a deacon and Sunday School Department director. He was past president of the Mississippi Optical Foundation and past president of the Mississippi Optical Association. He was past president of the Amory Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, a 50-year member and an honorary member. He served on the Amory Board of Adjustments from 1960 until June 2003 and with the American Legion for 50 years. He enjoyed hunting, golf, gardening, Native American artifacts, arrowhead hunting, building bluebird houses, listening to jazz music and working crossword puzzles.
Services were at 1 p.m. April 24 at the First Baptist Church in Amory with Dr. Allen Simpson and the Rev. Jimmy McFatter officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in Amory. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Gene Pierce of Amory; two sons, Bruce Pierce (Carolyn) of Wichita, Kan., and Philip Pierce (Debbie) of St. Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Pamela Sullivan (David) of Columbus, Patti Edwards (Wayne) of Meridian and Charlotte Markow (Paul Sr.) of Huntsville, Ala.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Pallbearers were Jerry Reese, Bud Everett, Ken Vaughn, Dan Rogers, Larry Palmer and Tommy Parish.

Leraue McDaniel
EVERGREEN - Leraue Wood McDaniel, 84, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Sanctuary Hospice House. She was born April 12, 1925, to Martell and Dona Comer Wood. She was married over 62 years to J.C. McDaniel, who preceded her in death on May 2, 2008. She was a lifelong, active member of Evergreen Baptist Church. A beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother, she was a kind, gentle person who unselfishly devoted her life to others while making her home a haven for her family.
Services were at 3 p.m. April 21 at Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Robbins and the Rev. David Langerfeld officiating. Burial was in New Chapel Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Young (Dr. Charles "Smokey" Young) of Tupelo; one sister, Dorothy Thompson of Tupelo; two grandchildren, Blake Young of Alpharetta, Ga., and Elise Young of Jackson; two sisters-in-law, Pat Hall (Durell) of Nettleton and Maxine Patterson (Dr. John) of Pontotoc; one brother-in-law, Eugene McDaniel (Joann) of Nettleton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Pallbearers were Jim Hawkins, John Thompson, Durell Hall and Dr. Bert Duncan.
Honorary pallbearers were special caregivers, Estella Eastman and Carmen Rangel; the staff of Rosewood Residence, where she lived the past three years; and a special niece, Lisa Hawkins.

Billy Elam Sr.
ABERDEEN - William Phillip "Billy" Elam Sr., 81, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Aug. 6, 1927, to Warren Dee Elam Sr. and Laura Bell Basinger Elam in Memphis. He was a lifelong resident of the Darracott community and a graduate of Aberdeen High School. He retired after 30 years as a fitter at Bamp&W in West Point. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Onnie Ray Davis Elam of Aberdeen; three sons, Phillip Elam (Teresa), Patrick Elam (Lisa) and Kelly Elam (Carolyn), all of Aberdeen; five grandchildren, Jessica, Misty, Justin, Tanner and Andrew; four stepgrandchildren, Derek, Chris, C.J. and Robert; three great-grandchildren, Sean, Jake and Taylor; a special friend, Mylinda Rea; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Jeanette Jackson; and one brother, Warren D. Elam Jr.

JASPER, Ala. - Charles W. Thomas Jr., 67, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at his home after a long illness. He was a beloved husband, father and friend.

PRAIRIE - Alexander Heard, 60, died April 14, 2009. He was born April 26, 1948, to Clarence Heard and Joanna Barr Heard. He was a member of the Lake Grove M.B. Church and a former employee of Babcock and Wilcox for 34 years. He enjoyed cooking and laughing with friends.

Dee Harris
AMORY - Vester Dave "Dee" Harris, 79, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at the Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory after a short illness. He was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Nettleton to Walter Dave and Noma Hawkins Harris. He lived all of his life in the Amory area. He married Cordie Mae Humphries in 1956. He worked as a machinist at Fabrivalve/ITT before his retirement. He was a member of the East Amory Baptist Church. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, woodworking and working with his animals.
Services were at 2 p.m. April 22 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Mike Todd and Bro. Stan Blaylock officiating. Burial was in the Hatley Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Cordie Mae Harris of Amory; two sons, Vester David Harris (Carol Elaine) and Brent Alan Harris (Karen Lynn), both of Amory; one daughter, Sherry Dale Sayset (Lonnie) of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Machelle Sayset, Lonnie Sayset, Tiffany Camilli, Jonathan Sayset, Alisha Reese, Carissa Griggs, Korey Harris, Kasey Harris and Holley Harris; and five great-grandchildren, Alexia Reese, Clayton Griggs, Vence Camilli, Andrew Sayset and Lily Sayset-Gorsch.

Thelma Creely
AMORY - Thelma Mary Scott Creely, 101, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory. She was born June 22, 1907, in Monroe County to George and Margaret Florence Fuqua Scott. She lived in Monroe County most of her life. She married George Preston Creely in 1927. Widowed at a young age, she worked hard raising her children and providing much love and support for her family throughout her life. She worked well in to her eighties as an accomplished sales person employed in several shops on Main Street in Amory. During World War II she was a supervisor at Gulf Ordinance Plant in Prairie, making rockets and various artillery. She loved people and enjoyed life. Her great love of vegetable gardening served her well in raising her family. An accomplished seamstress, she also enjoyed flower gardening and many kinds of needlework.
Services were at 10 a.m. April 25 at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with the Revs. Allen Simpson, Jimmy McFatter, Hopson Boutot, Jack Maroon and Michael Boutot officiating. Burial was in Harmony Cemetery in Monroe County.
Survivors include her two sons, Charles Preston Creely (Mary) of Amory and Gerald Scott Creely of Greenwood; her daughter, Mary Nell Creely Dorris of Amory; nine grandchildren, Dave Dorris, Scott Dorris, Pamela Dorris Hill, Carol Dorris Boutot, Mike Creely, Charlotte Creely, Van Creely, Roger Creely and Patty Creely Moore; 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, George Thomas Creely; infant daughter, Martha Etoile Creely; one grandson, Carl Thomas Creely; one great-grandson, Adrien Boutot; three brothers, Clyde, Newbell and Ollie Scott; three sisters, Clara Scott Reeves, Sally Scott Reeves and Myrtle Scott Posey; and one son-in-law, Hopson Dorris.

AMORY - Phyllis Annette Sims Conklin, 48, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the West Point Community Living Center after a short illness. She was born July 2, 1960, in Houston, Texas. She lived in Houston, Texas, Bull Head City, Ariz., and in Amory for two years. She married Daniel Conklin II in 2005. She worked as the store manager for Dollar General in Okolona. She was Baptist. She enjoyed cooking and playing on the computer.

ABERDEEN - Jerushia K. Stone, 82, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at the Courtyard Nursing Facility in Fulton. She was born Sept. 23, 1926, in Fulton. She was a lifelong member of St. Matthew M.B. Church, where she was active as the announcing clerk, choir member, Sunday School secretary and assistant church secretary. She was an employee of Cooper's Cleaners for 62 years. She loved fishing and working with flowers.
Services were Wednesday, April 22, at St. Matthew M.B. Church in Fulton with the Rev. J.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial was in Shiloh Community Cemetery. Westbrooks Funeral Home of Aberdeen was in charge of the arrangements.

AMORY - Lou Ollie Mae Hood, 90, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory. She was born May 30, 1918, in Monroe County. She married Roy Lamar Hood in 1935; he died in 1991. She worked as a seamstress for Wilson's Mfg. and Amory Garment Co. She worked at Golden Living Center and volunteered at Gilmore Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Cason Baptist Church, where she was active in the Golden Believers and the WMU. She enjoyed gardening and music.
Services were at 3:30 p.m. April 25 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Jim Manley, Bro. Tommy Whaley and Bro. Shane Crawford officiating. Burial was in the Old Union Cemetery near Cason.
Survivors include four sons, Roy Lamar Hood Jr. (Linda), Billy R. Hood (Ann Carter), Jerry W. Hood and Hershel D. Peggy Carson
OKOLONA - Peggy Joyce Taylor Carson, 63, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at her home. She was born Feb. 10, 1946, in Aberdeen to Thomas E. Taylor and Easter Lee Woods Taylor. She graduated from Aberdeen High School and from Itawamba Community College with a degree in business administration. She was a housewife and a councilwoman, currently serving on the Okolona City Council. She was a member of the Carnation Baptist Church in Okolona. She was active in the civic life of Okolona and had a great love for people and for life in general. An avid conversationalist, she enjoyed traveling, reading, her flowers, her yard and swimming pool. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services were at 2 p.m. April 26 from the First Baptist Church of Okolona with Bro. Truman Carter officiating, assisted by Bro. Robert Earl Fowlkes. Burial followed in the Howell Cemetery in Monroe County. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors, Okolona Chapel was in charge of all arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Craig Carson of Okolona, who she married Feb. 18, 1994; her mother, Easter Lee Taylor of Aberdeen; three daughters, Angel (Kenny) Steen of Tupelo, Amanda (Dewayne) Brown of Bartahatchie, Miss., and Missy Graham of Columbus; two sons, Dale (Laurie) Robertson of Bartahatchie and Terry (Anita) Robertson of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Memory, Karci, Cameron, Brandon, Dayton, Lee, Courtney and Stacie; two great-grandchildren, Patience and Trevor; two sisters, Judy Taylor and Betty Dye, both of Aberdeen; two brothers, Charles Taylor of Tyrone, Ga., and Murrell Taylor of Mooreville.

Homer Marble
PRAIRIE - Homer Lee Marble, 44, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Feb. 28, 1965, to Phenella Robertson Marble and Lee Dale Marble. He was a 1984 graduate of West Clay County High School and a member of Pleasant Plain M.B. Church. He really loved serving on the Usher Board at his church, raising chickens and turkeys, and riding his four-wheeler.
Services were at 2 p.m. April 26 at Pleasant Plain M.B. Church with the Rev. Michael McGaha officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Williams Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ralph Minga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Ralph Wheeler Minga, 89, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Greenwood Springs to James Ellis and Margarette Cora Odom Minga. He was a 1949 graduate of the University of Alabama. He married Margaret Jean Kirby on Sept. 10, 1947. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in a submarine repair unit in Pearl Harbor. He was a professional engineer in Metallurgical Engineering and he retired from Combustion Engineering. He was a life member of the American Welding Society.
Graveside services were 2 p.m. April 25 at the Lann Cemetery in Greenwood Springs with Bro. Wes White officiating. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Smithville was in charge.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margaret Minga of Chattanooga; one son, David Minga of London, Ky.; two daughters, Gail Minga of Atlanta, and Dorrie Minga LoBue of Evansville, Ind.; one brother, Kermit Minga of Greenwood Springs; three sisters, Jimmie Lois James of Houston, Texas, Ruth Whitehead of Smithville and Ophelia Thomas of Collierville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

AMORY - Eva Dora Donald Roby, 96, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory. She was born Dec. 3, 1912, in Itawamba County. She was married to the late Floyd Arlin Roby. She was a member of the Hatley Primitive Baptist Church. A master cook, she enjoyed being with her family and she loved to sew. She enjoyed gardening, telling jokes, making people laugh and music. She was an avid Elvis fan and number one fan of her son, Jimmy Dale Roby's, music.
Services were at 3 p.m. April 26 at the Bigbee Baptist Church with Bro. Tommy Whaley officiating. Burial was in the Dorsey Memorial Cemetery. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred Egger
AMORY - Mildred Reed Carter Egger, 94, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at her residence. She was born Nov. 13, 1914, in Monroe County to the late Lucas J. and Zula Tubb Carter. She was a lifelong resident of Monroe County and she was a graduate of Hatley High School. She married Elbert Clinton Egger in 1938, who later preceded her in death in 1961. She was a homemaker and worked for Amory Garment Co., Wilson's Mfg. and Glenn Mfg. She was a member of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church. An avid gardener, she enjoyed flowers and working in the yard. She enjoyed quilting and she was well known for her caramel cakes. Her family was special to her and she enjoyed spending time with them.
Services were at 10 a.m. April 28 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Elder Tim Cunningham officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Bourland (Hal Jr.) of Aberdeen and Peggy Bethany (James) of Amory; one brother, O.G. Carter (Ruth) of Amory; five grandchildren, Dr. James Nichols (Jamie), Bill Bethany (Tricia), Misty Broome (Marc), Tonya Westbrook (Jay) and Brent Bourland (B.J.); eight great-grandchildren, Madeline, Abigail, Malia and Jay Nichols, Sara Kathryn and Kayleigh Westbrook and Tucker and Rylee Bourland; and special friends and caregivers, Nellie Howard and Bernice Suggs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Troy, Delray, Trenton and Willard Carter.
Pallbearers were Terry Carter, Scottie Carter, Jerry Carter, Leon Carter, Shelby Carter, Junior Pickle and Mike Riley.

Gordon Langford
AMORY - Gordon Mitchell Langford, 82, died Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the Community Hospice-Darlington Oaks in Verona. He was born Sep. 22, 1926, in Greenfield, Tenn., to the late James Watkins and Vivian Rachels Langford. He married Imogene Nabors in 1947, who survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and he was a member of the American Legion. He lived in Jackson and Amory since 1956. Before his retirement he owned and operated Amory Electric and Amory Marine Sales for 53 years. He was a member of the St. Andrew's United Methodist Church and he enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, gardening, his race horses and his beloved dog, Sandy.
Services were 11 a.m. April 28 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Charles Burton officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Imogene Langford; five sons, Rodney Langford (Joyce) of Amory, Gerald Langford (Janice) of Amory, Herbert Langford (Sue) of Nettleton, Michael (Susan) Langford of Amory and Richard Langford (Marsha) of Tupelo; one daughter, Sharon Langford of Tupelo; one brother, Charles Langford of Amory; 10 grandchildren, Eric Langford, Alan Langford, Bridgett Finn, Corey Langford, Chad Langford, Jordan Langford, Isaac Langford, Paige Langford, Macy Langford and Amber Langford; and eight great-grandchildren, Shelby Langford, Ethan Langford, Blake Langford, Mitch Finn, Madison Langford, Drew Langford, Anna Langford and Leah Langford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Billy Langford.
Pallbearers were Chris Finn, Eric Langford, Corey Langford, Chad Langford, Ethan Langford and Drew Langford.
