Kayla Carter of Aberdeen has been selected by the faculty of the Department of Music and Theatre, Mississippi University for Women, in Columbus as the Outstanding Freshman Music Student for 2008-2009. Carter is a Residential Honors Student majoring in Music Therapy. She is the daughter of Troy and Sheryl Carter.

Paine graduates from Fire Academy

Firefighter Derrick L. Paine of the Aberdeen Fire Department graduated April 9 from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter course held at the Mississippi State Fire Academy in Jackson.

The six-week course included classroom and practical instruction in the areas of fire behavior, fire suppression, rescue, incident command, hazardous materials and other fire related topics. This course meets and exceeds the National Fire Protection Association for Firefighter Qualifications and the uniform minimum training standards stated in the Mississippi Code section 83-1-37.
