JACKSON - Mississippi Department of Mental Health Director Ed Legrand said he hopes a new legislative study committee will find ways to help people with mental illness get help through community programs before the condition requires inpatient care.

A new law created the panel. Legrand said its purpose is to clarify the roles of the various components of the state’s mental health system, which includes public and private providers.

Legrand said he’s hopeful the committee will encourage a revision in state laws to “change the delivery of services to a community-based system rather than continue to rely on inpatient.”

The bill is House Bill 897.
