TUPELO - Collect your unwanted chemicals and bundle your dead batteries for the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.

Residents can dump a variety of dangerous items not typically collected by residential waste haulers. The event lasts from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lee County Agri-Center in Verona.

It's sponsored through grants by the Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority, Three Rivers Planning and Development District, the Lee County Board of Supervisors and the state Department of Environmental Quality.

"We are urging people to go out and participate," said Lee County Supervisor Tommie Lee Ivy. "This time of year we're trying to beautify the area. It's a good program and a good time to clean up around your house. We need to get as many people out as we can."

Items accepted at the event include old appliances, cleaners, antifreeze, batteries, electronics, fertilizers, insecticides, lighter fluid, paint, propane tanks and tires.

Only household hazardous waste will be accepted; not commercial.

Also banned from the event are sofas, construction material, biological or infectious waste, explosives or radioactive material.
