It's too soon to say how much money was raised at the two-hour event, which offered up for bid more than 45 pieces of animal-themed art. Organizers said they'll have a better estimate later this month.
All artwork was donated by local artists, including Oxford resident Gara Gillentine, who contributed three computer-altered photographs of cats.
"I love animals, but I especially love cats," Gillentine said in explaining why she chose to participate for the second year.
Art varied from paintings to sculptures and several photographs. Humane society board member Martha Dale said she was impressed by the work donated this year.
"We're so lucky to have so may talented people to contribute," she said.
Event-goers munched hors d'oeuvres and sipped wine while bidding silently for the array of art. Winners were announced at the end of the event, which was held at the Gum Tree Museum of Art.
"My wife and I have two labs and love animals," said John Guyton, who bid on several pieces of art along with his wife Michelle. "We'll probably walk away with a few things tonight."
Money raised will go toward the construction of a new animal shelter to replace the aging facility on South Gloster Street. The organization needs at least $500,000 to reach its goal.
Last year, the humane society raised $25,000.
Board member Rachel Piece said she's confident this event helped push the group close to the mark.
"It seems to be getting bigger and better every year," she said. "We're just very thankful and very excited."
The humane society took in nearly 8,500 cats and dogs last year but can hold only about 150 at a time. Officials say they desperately need a larger, more modern facility to care for all the unwanted pets.
