TUPELO - Republican congressional candidate Henry Ross of Eupora called his incumbent opponent a nice guy who failed to keep his promises to the 1st District.

Ross, a 55-year-old attorney, told a small crowd Tuesday at the Lee County Library he'll work more diligently than Alan Nunnelee to shrink the federal government, reduce the national deficit, defund Planned Parenthood and oppose President Barack Obama's every move.

"Alan's a nice guy, but he's also an established Republican who is going to do every single thing the Republican leadership in Washington tells him to do," Ross said. "Alan, we're going to send you home."

The candidate made his comments during a 15-minute speech at the Lee County Library in Tupelo, where he was introduced by his wife of 30 years, Ann. It was among four stops on his campaign kick-off tour. He also spoke in Hernando, Columbus and his hometown of Eupora.

This is Ross's second bid for the seat. He had lost in the 2010 Republican primary to Nunnelee and, since then, has hinted several times he'd try again. This is Nunnelee's first term.

Initially viewed as a Tea Party favorite, Ross said he's prepared to shut down the federal government to force fiscally responsible changes, as many Tea Party supporters had urged last year. But the group's Tupelo spokesman Grant Sowell said Tuesday it isn't ready to make an endorsement.

If voters put him in office, Ross said, it will "shake up this country and make history," possibly encouraging other Americans to oust incumbents in favor of more right-leaning candidates like him. He said he hopes they'll form a majority in Congress and reshape the country.

"I want to get us back to a God-centered, constitutional government," Ross said. "It will be the last chance in America."

The former Eupora mayor and circuit court judge faces Nunnelee and Robert Estes of Southaven in the March 13 GOP primary. The winner will square off against Democrat Brad Morris and Libertarian Danny Bedwell in the November general election.

I see little or no difference between Ross or Nunnalee. They both think that Government is the solution to most of societies woes. They only differ in HOW government should solve the woes. Please understand that no one has to commit to a candidate yet, as this is just the primary season. Once the GOP Primary is over and they choose their candidate, I will offer the voters a distinct difference in the candidates. < > Central planning does not work, even if it is done by wise, caring, and benevolent people. After the Primary, I will make my website public and you can find out exactly why I'm different. Danny Bedwell (L)

Mr. Ross is a very smart man, but he is not the man for this job. It is time to send one of us to DC, someone who will not buckle under the pressure of the machine. We need a working man, one who has been creating jobs while standing up for our nation!

Mr. Ross is not a tea party favorite. While he has been courting the tea party, he has NEVER done any of the grunt work, like setting up tables, or bringing water out of the back, or setting up sound equipment. No, he likes to show up and

smile ONCE all the real work has been done! I am tired of

bring courted, I want a real hard worker sent to DC, and

Robert Estes is the man for the job!!!! Check him out at

"and oppose President Barack Obama's every move."

And this is exactly why government doesn't work. These idiots don't care whether the other party has a good idea or not. Just because Obama is a Democrat does not mean everything he does is bad. And Republicans (contrary to what they think) are not the only Christians in this country.

This guy is just as bad as Nunnelee. We need someone who is going to reduce government and who has morals and ethics. Ross does not have any of these attributes either does Nunnelee. When are we going to have a real choice? I guess i will just have to write in a name of a candidate that can do something. The ballot is rigged.

I would suggest to Mr. Ross that he give some specific legislation that he would author. The problem I have with Nunalee is that he gave all these broad general statements of what he's going to do, but he hasn't offered up any legislation at all. This pretty much goes for Roger Wicker and Thad Chocran as well. I can't speak for the other Reps. in our state because I'm not in their district, but what I would like to see is our Representatives ACTUALLY REPRESENT US. Sponser some bills that actually matter to Ms and the country as a whole. Nunalee hasn't done anything but draw a check for two years and go along with what the party heads tell him to vote for or against. We need leaders not followers.

"Nunalee hasn't done anything but draw a check for two years and go along with what the party heads tell him to vote for or against."

Why would you have expected anything else? All he did was what Haley told him to do here...

Ross is either an idiot or thinks the voting public is. He is proposing nothing different than what Nunnelee is already doing not to mention what the majority of the US House has been doing that has given Congress the lowest approval rating in history.

His campaign slogan should be “What we are doing now isn’t working so if elected I plan to double down on it!”
