OXFORD — Mississippi State says it recruits athletes from far and wide.

In Oxford, University of Mississippi fans aren't happy.

WTVA-TV reports that an MSU billboard sits on a busy street in Oxford near the Ole Miss campus. It shows MSU football players holding up the Egg Bowl trophy next to the words "Play with the best."

Rebel fans say they feel MSU is rubbing in last year's win.

MSU officials said the billboard is only about recruitment.

"We do billboards for different reasons. In this particular instance this board is placed strategically to try to attract student athletes to our campus. We've done similar billboards elsewhere in the past," said Mike Nemeth, senior associate athletic director at MSU.

Michael Thompson, the senior associate athletic director at Ole Miss, said he was not surprised at all about the billboard.

"They (MSU) have an audience they want to reach and they are going to buy certain media that reach that audience and in certain markets that they want to target. It's not any different than what we are doing. We target markets that we see as great opportunity markets for the message we want to send," said Thompson.

Knowing this still doesn't sit well with Harrison Edwards. He said some lines you just don't cross.

"You know I don't see any Ole Miss stuff down in Starkville. I think it's more of a respect thing," said Edwards.

MSU officials said the billboard went up Jan. 1 and will remain until the end of the month.

I really wish people would stop bringing race into these posts. You make the state of Mississippi look bad by trying to divide races instead of accepting that we are all one people regardless of skin color. We are all AMERICANS. To TUPELO 12; The University of Nevade at Las Vegas has a colonel for a mascot and that colonel looks like the former Ole Miss Colonel. The only difference is their school or state has enough sense as to leave race out of a mascot issue. My question is "What is it to ya'll?" There is as much publicity (if not more) with "dog fighting" but I don't hear any Ole Miss REBELS calling the Humane Society wanting you to get rid of your mascot. Why?? Because we at Ole Miss don't give a care about what goes on at your college. Ya'll need to get control of your obsession with Ole Miss. My view on the billboard is this; Everyone knows how arragant Dan Mullen is and we also know how it always backfires on him. I have a hunch it is Mullen who starts all the rumors of other schools wanting to hire him (Penn. State). Then he conveniently comes out and says he hasn't been contacted by the school which is the truth because he hasn 't. Joke of it all is that you people are buying into all this and praising the guy for two SEC wins against the weakest teams in the SEC. I also believe the billboards, along with his arrogance, has helped our recruiting. Athletes visit State and it's not long before they are signing with Ole Miss.

small town bs. I compare this to degree of seriousness of being on the playground and someone calls your mom a dirty word and you are supposed to fight. Who cares- most students in the state of ms cant even graduate high school. How bout putting up a billboard with some spelling words on it? Other countries graduate more physicists and doctors than we have folks just graduating period. Worried bout some football.....

ROFL!

@DosChiChis

There are many fine black men and women who study at MSU and do not feel harassed (D.W.B.)

Moo U? It's an agricultural based university. What ya expect?

Shoot, I say let them put up signs on campus if they want to, it won't change who they are. Anybody that has ever been to Starkvegas knows what a crappy town and school they have. Nothing there but farm equipment, lawn mowers, meth labs, crackheads, and the home office of the KKK. You best not be black and be caught D.W.B. (Driving while Black). You can fake it with signs and smooth talk, but when they wake up in the morning down there, they will still be Moo U and we will still be THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI.

Plus, I haven't seen where it's helped their recruiting any.

Not one statement by this tool can be substantiated. Once again, he demonstrates his ability to be the Villiage Idiot.

Who we are? I'd rather go to Mississippi State than a university that is full of ignorant, hypocritical rednecks who think they are of a higher class than they really are. Harvard of the South my a**. You say that Mississippi State has the home office of the KKK when Ole Miss is a university that had and still wants a confederate colonel as its mascot. John F. Kennedy had to send the National Guard to Ole Miss just to integrate the school, so don't talk about Mississippi State being racist.

I'm not a supporter of this marketing idea, but who is Harrison Edwards?

Apparently the only person they could get to interview that really had a problem with the sign.

Putting it that close to the campus is a bit much though. There has been an MSU billboard in Tupelo for years and it wasn't a problem there.

If you want to play with the best then its neither MSU or UM. SHould be more like Delta State (consistently good) or EMCC this past year.

gardenhead; Let me throw GROSS in with Ward and Wallace. Three great athletes on their way to Ole Miss. Don't get much better than that.

Well gardenhead we can start with CHANNING WARD and BO WALLACE. I'm beginning to think Mullen might be the best recruiter THE University of Mississippi has. Recruits visit state and withing a week they commit to Ole Miss.

Ward and Wallace wanted a chance to play early. The talent at Mississippi affords them that opportunity. Hope you win a SEC game real soon.

Why would anyone care what they do in Oxford? The signs are owned by corporations, and those corporations are going to take money from anyone willing to pay. I think it's smart of them to try to attract the better athletes in the state are deciding to come to THE University of Mississipp.

After much consideration, I believe Ole Miss is behind this. This is an excellent way to get tourists into town as they will come to photograph this treasure and maybe have a bite and a pint while they're there.

The bigger question is, WHO exactly are we trying to recruit from the Ole Miss football team? I can't think of anybody that we would want!
