I've got a little more info on the incident involving junior wide receiver Chad Bumphis early Sunday morning, when he was arrested by Tupelo Police for public drunkenness and disorderdly conduct.
No other arrests were made in connection with that incident, although police are trying to find out who assaulted Bumphis inside the Atlanta Bar & Grill during a New Year's Eve celebration. Sgt. James King of the Street Crimes Unit said police will be following up with Bumphis soon to see if he knew his attacker, who had fled the scene by the time officers arrived.
As for why Bumphis was arrested, Maj. Jackie Clayton shed some more light on the matter today. He said a shirtless Bumphis was outside the bar when police arrived, shouting and cursing after being attacked.
"They had to deal with this young man for quite a while, because he was upset," Clayton said.
Bumphis was not cooperative and so was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail, where he was charged and then released on his own recognizance. His court date is Jan. 12.
"Him being a ballplayer doesn't have anything to do with him being arrested," Clayton said. "He was arrested because he was being disorderly."
Clayton said Bumphis, who suffered a cut on his neck and a broken tooth, was attended to by medics that night.
